If you’re like most dog owners, you lay out $30, $40, $50 or more every time you take your dog to the groomer. Sure, your dog is worth every penny, and we all know how important proper grooming is to a dog’s health and good looks, but let’s face it — that’s a lot of money isn’t it? Sure it is; and unless you’re rolling in money, you can probably find something else to spend $50 on, right? I know I can.

The Saint Bernard has always been a favorite breed, but never more so than it is today, especially in the United States.

Over the centuries, this great big “teddy bear” dog’s main claim to fame has been the miraculous rescuing of victims lost in the European Alps. Ever since Barry, the world’s most famous Saint Bernard, set a record for having saved over forty lives, this dog has been revered by all who appreciate the remarkable ability of these faithful working dogs. The stories of their heroism brings hundreds upon hundreds of tourists annually to the Hospice in Switzerland, the land of their origin.

Their heritage dates back to the days before Hannibal crossed the Alps with his herds of elephants and warriors. The dogs at that time were more like Mastiffs than the Saint Bernard as we know it today. These Molossian dogs, which were used in the ancient wars, were often left behind in the mountains by the Carthagians and the Romans when they moved on after their battles. When they bred with the local mountain dogs a new breed appeared which eventually evolved and became a Saint Bernard.

Their rescue work is depicted in oil paintings dating back to the beginning of the 17th century, and one, dated 1695, is hanging at the Hospice. The Hospice and the dogs are just as famous today as they were when the Hospice first opened its doors to the weary mountain travelers. This breath-taking spot, on top of the world, is separated from the Italian Alps by a small lake and the monastery originally built by Saint Bernard is maintained under the guidance of the Saint Bernard monks.

Destroyed by fire in 1967, the Hospice has been rebuilt and today visitors driving up the perilous narrow mountain roads arrive at a new Hospice consisting of two guest hotels, shops, and most important of all, the famous kennel facilities of the legendary Saint Bernard rescue dogs.

At one time, these Chapel Kennels were the largest in Europe, and while rescue work today is not so much a major part of the dogs’ lives, the monks in residence there are more than happy to tell the stories of the impressive work they have done during snow storms, blizzards and avalanches over the past hundreds of years. They are especially eager to tell the story of Barry, the Saint Bernard who provided the most colorful and dramatic story of all.

After dying a natural death in Berne, Switzerland, where he had been sent to live out his old age, Barry was mounted and now stands in a glass case in the Berne Museum of Natural History so that all may view this great legendary animal. He is not as impressive as some of our Saints today, but he is unmistakably a Saint Bernard and one that fits within the standard for the breed.

Many other Saints have served well as rescue dogs but it is the famous Barry who captured the hearts and imaginations of all who have ever heard of the Hospice of Saint Bernard and the remarkable life-saving dogs.

During one period of their development, Saints were called Barryhundes in honor of their heroic predecessor. It wasn’t until 1823 that the name Saint Bernard was heard and has applied to the breed ever since. Since then, they have also been known as, or referred to as, Holy Dogs, Alpine Mastiffs, Cloister Dogs, Mountain Dogs, Hospice Dogs, Saint Bernard-Mastiffs, and Butcher Dogs. This last name was a result of the enormous amounts of meat they ate and it was said that only butchers could afford to feed them. Since the breed served the Monastery of Saint Bernard so well, and because of Barry, the name Saint Bernard became the most appropriate.

A most selective breeding program was upheld to ensure that only the most hardy, rugged dogs are kept to follow in Barry’s footsteps and to maintain the quality of the rescue teams. These are the dogs which can best withstand the strenuous climbing, the extreme weather conditions, and the high altitude. At 8,000 feet, even the monks are able to serve only about eight years. But while they are in residence, monks on skis, and monks training and working with the dogs are a familiar sight to those who visit the Hospice. Tradition is being maintained.

Today, many German Shepherd dogs are also being trained as a main choice to rescue and patrol work along with the Saint Bernards, even though there is actually little need for rescue dogs in the Alps today. Rescue teams are now composed of helicopters, ski patrols, and snow mobiles which course over or along the alpine highways and tunnels. Rescue dogs are used now only to locate missing skiers or residents who wander off too far into the mountains. Sadly, the instinct for rescue work is lost in our American Saint Bernards. Since there is little need for mountain rescue work, the instinct fades with each passing generation.

Dogs from the Saint Bernard Hospice were frequently bred to those owned by people in the valleys from about 1670 until late in the 1800′s. To some extent this is still practiced today. It was 1884, however, when a Henry Schumacher printed a first edition of a Swiss Kennel Club manual which outlined correct breeding practices. It advocated the shorthaired Saint for rescue work; as the snow often would stick to the coats of the rough or long-coated Saint Bernards and freeze, weighing them down and hampering their speed. Today both long and short-coated Saints are well received and both are used in breeding programs. Length of coat is strictly a matter of preference.

The first Saint Bernard was exported to England in 1810. His name was Lion, and Lion was further immortalized by being painted by the famous artist, Sir Edwin Landseer. England imported more extensively in the early 1900′s where, until that time, the Mastiffs had reigned supreme. These two gigantic breeds were crossbred with the idea of developing a bigger and better Mastiff.

The breed prospered and gained in popularity to the point where a Saint Bernard named Sir Bedivere was exported to the United States for an amazing sum of money – $7,000. It was almost inevitable that the breed would soon deteriorate when almost exclusive emphasis was put on size rather than conformation. The breed suffered enormously and even today, Saints are not one of the most popular breeds in the British Isles.

Saints were bred and registered in the United States beginning in the late 1800′s and by 1890 entries at one major show listed over 150 dogs. One of the first great Saints in this country was named Hector, and he was imported by the Hospice Kennels in New Jersey. There were many other pioneer kennels which spared no expense in importing good stock to establish the breed, though most of them are no longer in operation today.

The first and original Saint Bernard Club in the United States was organized February 22, 1888. The club adopted the European, or International Standard for the breed. This original club was dissolved in 1897 and the presently active Saint Bernard Club of America was organized at Grand Rapids, Michigan, in December of that same year, making this parent club one of the oldest member clubs in the American Kennel Club. Colonel Jacob Ruppert, Jr. was its first president, a position he held intermittently for over 30 years. Today the club has many regional clubs all across the country.

The first German Saint Bernard Club was founded in 1891 in Munich, but the quality of the German dogs was poor. The first stud book published in 1894 contained over 300 entries, which indicated considerable interest, but during the two World Wars the breed suffered tremendous setbacks when many of the dogs starved to death or were destroyed by their owners. A few astute breeders managed to hold on to some of their choice stock so that a little of the best bloodlines did manage to survive and were not lost forever.

Even though the majority of the photographs we see of Saint Bernards feature the dogs with the brandy casks around their necks, there is no actual record of any Saint Bernard ever having to carry a whiskey keg to a lost traveler. It’s a marvelous story – but purely conjecture. The first evidence of the brandy keg appeared in an Edwin Landseer painting and merely “caught on” as a part of the legend of the breed.

Saint owners know the stories are not true but go along with it since it seems so logical. Even at the Hospice some of the Saints wear them, but it is simply to delight the tourists who wish to take photographs. Actually it presents the opportunity for the monks to tell the truth about the whiskey kegs and set the record straight. They are quick to explain that the monks themselves have been known to carry stimulants for the frozen victims in the snow, but never do the dogs take it around their necks. In spite of this fact, the making of casks for Saint Bernards has become quite a profitable business.

While we have revealed the untrue of the Saint Bernard cask and have explained that they are not seldom used for rescue work in the mountains, we must also recognize their ever-increasing number in the dog show rings, in the obedience trials, and their service in the fields as working dogs pulling carts and hauling children around in wagons. They continue to gain in popularity to the point that they are now in the top 50 favorite dogs in the United States.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a sweet-natured and even-tempered dog that enjoys bringing affection and spirited fun to a household.

General Appearance and Description

These spirited dogs are not called “King” for nothing. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is friendly, eager to please and always a crowd pleaser, thanks to its sweet and elegant looks.

The Cavalier Spaniel usually has dark and expressive eyes that are large. They don’t dominate the face, but always get attention. They have a wavy silky coat that’s usually black and tan.

Basic Temperament

The King Charles Cavalier is outgoing and affectionate. He will always want to please you and is intelligent enough to know what you need from him.

The Cavalier King Charles is descended from hunting dogs, so he loves to run around in the great outdoors. It’s important, then, that the Cavalier Spaniel is kept on a leash and in a fenced background. Their desire to hunt and explore can often cause harm.

Like all small dogs, this dog needs to know who the boss is. Make sure you establish yourself as the pack leader so he doesn’t think he needs to take that role for himself.

Care Required

This dog has a fair amount of fur to look after, so brush him often and bathe or shampoo him as needed. The hair on the ears, which is long, can tangle and mat, so the ears should be brushed often. Even the hair between the pads on the feet should be attended to.

Not an ideal dog for those with allergies, as this dog sheds at an average rate.

For the most success with king charles spaniel puppy; it is a good idea for you take the time to do a little online research.

Exercise Requirements

Give your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel a regular walk, and give him plenty of playtime. The Cavalier Spaniel dogs do well in apartments and home environments that don’t give them much of an outdoor area as long as they get that regular walk.

Take care in extreme conditions, as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can be sensitive to heat and cold.

Training

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are relatively easy to train, thanks to their intelligence and desire to please. They are intuitive, so they will understand what you want and will be able to perform as you wish through the use of this intuitive nature.

These dogs are quite capable of learning complicated obedience tricks and do well in competitive obedience competitions.

Height and Weight

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will be about 12 to 13 inches tall in adulthood and should weigh somewhere between 10 and 18 pounds.

Health and Longevity

Cavalier Spaniel dogs are prone to a number of health issues. Some of these problems include kneecaps that dislocate, ear infections, hearing trouble, and back problems. They also often suffer from hereditary eye diseases.

Unfortunately, many dogs will also carry a hereditary tendency toward heart problems, which can be fatal. For this reason, many canine experts suggest choosing a dog whose medical history can be checked going back several generations.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels also gain weight easily so their diet needs to be carefully watched.

Most Cavalier King Charles Spaniels will live from 9 to 14 years.

Suitability

These dogs make excellent hunting dogs and are often introduced into homes with this intention. King Charles Cavalier dogs don’t necessarily enjoy being in a home with children. Most experts suggest that this dog be placed in a home with only older children.

The Cavalier Spaniel does get along well with other dogs and other non-canine pets, however.

When Victorian England’s economic breakthroughs ramped up demand for wool and mutton, one major problem that needed a quick solution was how to manage all the sheep that will exploit the vast, unfenced lands across the countryside. But the dilemma was not for long, since versatile border collies dogs soon became known throughout the nation as the answer.

Since the beginning, border collie dogs have always been taken for gatherers, rather than drovers or tenders, having been bred and trained to gather sheep from the hills. But the dog can still be taught to take the stock away from the shepherd, and even to confine their charges up to a certain point. Moreover, they are remarkably sensitive to slight variations in the sounds of the whistles they have mastered, and will respond as desired.

In fact, the scientific breeding of our current-day livestock-herder border collies started in that era, but is still in progress to this day. The focus of breeders are on a handful of inheritable working values, and these take into account other dog breeds they complement, terrain, livestock type, and climate. At the hands of a knowledgeable trainer, this intelligent dog absorbs a brilliant authority of livestock. A true-blue border collie’s ultimate gauge of skill is in working sheep and cattle.

On the other hand, the degrees of satisfaction from those who have owned a border collie dog are as numerous as the degrees of ignorance and knowledge about this fascinating but challenging breed. Some people find no difference between the joy of owning the breed from reigning in the dogs’ herding instinct, high energy, and absorbent brains. Less skilled owners, meanwhile, have frustrating stories to tell. Indeed, it is easy to confuse the calm and discipline of the sheepdog trial dog as an automatic segment in the breed, when in fact this is the result of effectively meeting the dog’s mental and physical demands. This implies that in pet environments, the breed may make good pets, but on the condition that they are assisted in the lifestyle they crave for, or that they have some border collie training. This explains the critical need for an honest review of one’s lifestyle, skills and needs if a person is interested in getting a border collie.

The German Shepherd Dog also called the Alsatian comes literally from the German Deutscher Schäferhund. They are a relatively new breed of large-sized dog that dates from the late 19th century. They are part of the Herding group that was originally developed as a working dog for herding sheep.

Often employed by the military and police for their obedience and intelligence. The German Shepherd is nearly always one of the top 3 global breeds.
The breed originates from a dog called Hektor Linksrhein. He so impressed Von Stephanitz that he purchased it and changed the dogs name to Horand von Grafrath and founded Alsatian Dog Society.
Horand became the centre-point of the Alsatian breeding programs and was bred with many other society member dogs.
The German Shepherds popularity has grown quickly throughout the 20th Century, though taking dives in popularity in the early days due to health problems from poor breeding and after the world wars with anti German sentiment. This caused the UK Kennel Club to rename it to “Alsatian Wolf Dog”, a while later the wolf dog appendage was dropped and in 1977, the Alsatian Dog was back as the official name, though it is still often known as the Alsatian. The Alsatian popularity was helped by animal actors such as Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart. Now it is globally the third most popular dog breed.

They are a large dog of between 55 and 65 centimetres ( 22 and 26 in) at the top of the back and weigh between 22 and 40 kilograms ( sixty lb).

The German Shepherd’s face has a long square cut muzzle, a doomed forehead, a long neck, powerful jaws, large erect ears (that are often pulled back when on the move), black nose and brown, medium-sized eyes. With a bushy tail.

Alsatians come in a variety of colours, the most common being the tan/black and red/black versions with black saddles and masks. Rarer versions include the sable, all-black, all-white, liver and blue types, which may not fit country breed standards. German Shepherds have a double coat. A thick close dense outer coat, which sheds all year round and a thick undercoat. The long-hair variety is rarer.
The Alsatian, like many working dogs is very intelligent, and are considered to be the third most intelligent breed of dog (Border Collies is deemed to be number one by Stanley Coren in his book The Intelligence of Dogs). This intelligence combined with their strength makes the breed sought after as police, guard, and search and rescue dogs, being able to quickly learn various tasks and interpret instructions better than other large breeds.
German Shepherds have a reputation for aggression and have been banned in areas as a result. Statistically, in the States, the German Shepherd is responsible for more unprovoked indiscriminate bites than any other breed, and have a reputation to attack smaller dog breeds.

Additionally research has shown that German Shepherds are the breed third most likely to attack a person and in another report found that Alsatians accounted for almost half of the dog bites that required medical attention, compared to a more typical twenty of bites requiring medical attention, not a surprise with their powerful jaws and scissor teeth.

There is no problem with the Alsatian breed, it is the fault of the owners. As with all clever active dog (or person), if they are not regularly active and kept occupied, they can become troublesome. Good dog training and dog socialisation are crucial for a dog like the German Shepherd. The Alsatian is different from the collie, which a lot of its aggressiveness has been breed out from show strains, the German Shepherd does not seem to have lost this character.

The German Shepherd are great with the family they know, but can be over protective of their home and family – why they are a great guard dog. Due to this they may appear a bit aloof.

Alsatians learn well and are very obedient and not easily distracted, but due to their strong character, you need to be very forceful with them.
The Alsatian will need to have two good walks a day. They are not a dog for a busy family who cannot give them the time and attention. For this reason, busy families regularly ask dog walkers to help out by walking them for several hours a day.
Poor breeding has led to common genetic health problems, hip and elbow joint problems (dysplasia) which often causes the dog pain and may cause arthritis. The German Shepherd also suffers from monorchidism (one testicle), weakness of temperament, and missing teeth, as well as folded or bent ears which never fully turn up when reaching adulthood. Due to the large and open nature of their ears, Shepherds also are prone to ear infections.

German Shepherds, like many deep chested dogs are prone to bloat, this is often fatal, so if you think this may be a problem, go straight to the veterinary. Bloat is a gas build up in the stomach, caused by a number of different causes. The symptoms of distress for no apparent reason, a firm distension of the abdomen, general weakness, depression, problems breathing, hypersalivation, and retching without vomiting. A high rate of dogs with bloat have cardiac arrhythmias ( forty percent in one study), loss of appetite, vomiting and weight loss.

The Alsatian also suffers from Degenerative Myelopathy, or DM is a neurological disease and are more likely to have Von Willebrand Disease, a common generic bleeding disorder, which shows in varying degrees of bleeding tendency, usually in the form of easy bruising, nosebleeds and bleeding gums. .

In spite of these problems, the Alsatian is sturdy with simple dog care and the average lifespan of a Alsatian is around nine years, which is normal for a large dog.

The German Shepherd has a great nose so is one of the most widely-used breeds in a many roles requiring this ability, including search and rescue, cadaver searching, narcotics detection, explosives detection, accelerant detection, and mine detection dog, amongst others.

So the Alsatian is a superb clever dog that will bond well with you, if you have the time and dedication for him. Not advised for busy working families.

There is a reason the Boston Terrier is a popular dog in the United States. He’s a sweet, cute canine that enjoys the attention he derives from his human friends.

General Appearance and Description

The Boston Terrier is an intelligent and mannered dog.

They are gentle dogs that enjoy feeling like they are part of the family.

Boston Terrier are small-size dogs that have small, erect ears, short and wide muzzles and dark, large eyes. They are clean-looking dogs with straight, muscular limbs.

The coat of a Boston Bull Terrier is usually either brindle and white, or black and white. Some Boston Terrier puppies are brown and white.

Basic Temperament

Your Boston Terrier will be sensitive to the tone of your voice, and will feed off the energy in the home. They can be rambunctious and loud, or calm and quiet. Much depends on the mood of the house, the quality of any training the Boston Terrier has had, and whether or not a pack leader exists in the house.

The Boston Bull Terrier is a good watch dog as most will believe their home to be their castle and will do thier utmost to protect it.

Care Required

Boston Terrier puppies and dogs are easy to groom. Their short, smooth coat requires little attention. You should bathe your Bull Terrier only when necessary and comb or brush only as needed.

The only daily grooming needed is a quick wipe down with a damp cloth, especially in the eye area.

Not an ideal breed for those with allergies, the Boston Terrier sheds an average amount of hair for his breed.

Exercise Requirements

If your Boston Terrier isn’t given adequate physical and mental stimulation, he could become high strung and troublesome.

Instead, Boston Terrier breeders will recommend that you give your dog a long daily walk and regular play sessions.

This breed will generally do well living in a house with a yard or in an apartment as long as his daily activity needs are met.

Training

The intelligent Boston Terrier is quite easy to train. He understands your commands easily and loves to please you. These dogs are very sensitive and response to the human voice.

Be sure that you train the Boston Bull Terrier with firm and consistent effort. If you don’t establish yourself as the “top dog,” so to speak, he will.

Because these dogs can be dominant if training is not done properly, they will often cause problems during the training process or might become aggressive when training is attempted. If training is begun early, however, and sticks to the concept of firm and consistent, these dogs should pose no problems.

Some Boston Terriers can be hard to housebreak.

Height and Weight

The full-grown Boston Bull Terrier will be about 15 to 17 inches tall and will weigh from 10 to 25 pounds.

Health and Longevity

While these dogs have their share of health challenges, they can live a full and long life.

Some of the health issues include wheezing and snoring, thanks to their short face. They also might have problems in hot weather, and some dogs will overheat with exertion in the heat. Some dogs have a problem with drooling.

Tumors, particularly of the heart and skin, are common in Boston Terriers. Their eyes, which are generally prominent, are prone to injury.

If a Boston Terrier is bred badly, some will have a bone defect in the skull that can stunt brain growth. Though not incredibly common, this can result in a retarded dog.

Most Boston Terrier dogs will live to be older than 15 years.

Suitability

Boston Terriers are very good with children and are excellent when living in a house with senior citizens. This dog is also very good with strangers, so having a houseful of people is never a bad idea.

The Boston Terrier likes to live in a house with other non-canine pets, but generally doesn’t get along with other dogs, unless both are introduced as puppies.
