When a dog whines it is trying to communicate. Whining is one of the first actions that a dog learns. The hungry puppy whines to let its mother know that it is hungry. The puppy learns that whining produces the desired result because the mother dog feeds it when it whines.

A puppy will continue to whine when it is distressed or requires attention as it grows into a dog. A puppy is usually one of a litter and feels a sense of belonging to its litter. If a puppy becomes separated from its litter its whines are a sign of its distress and it is letting the litter know that it needs to be rescued.

When the puppy is removed from its litter to become a member of your family it may feel extreme distress at being removed from its familiar surroundings and former family. It will whine to communicate its distress to you.

You should start to train your dog not to whine at this time. If you pay attention to its whining you are reinforcing this action and the dog continues to believe that if it whines it gets the attention it wants. On the other hand it is important that you have taken care of the dog’s needs before you try to stop a dog from whining. Always ensure that your dog has food and water and is comfortable and is not trying to communicate to you that he is thirsty or hungry. Your dog should not whine when it is eating, running or going to the toilet and if it does it will need to be seen by a vet.

You must not neglect your dog and you must spend time with him and play with him. If you spend time with him when he is quiet and not whining it will reinforce good behavior.

Once your dog has adapted to you – its new family – it may suffer from separation anxiety if you leave it. Separation anxiety in dogs is not uncommon. Dogs are pack animals by nature so remember that when you leave it it may feel quite anxious. If you put your dog outside before you go out try spending a few minutes with it in the outside environment and make sure you leave it toys to play with. The dog will soon learn that being outside can be fun, too.

Listen to your dog’s whines and you’ll start to understand what it is he is trying to tell you. Your dog could be trying to communicate to you that he is hungry, thirsty, hot, cold, bored, lonely, wanting to go outside to relieve himself, or he may be in pain.

Provide your dog with plenty of stimulation and exercise. Your dog is a sociable animal and you should take him for walks, play with him and take him to dog parks so that he can learn to socialize with other dogs. Dogs are intelligent creatures and require exercise and stimulation or they can easily become bored. A dog that is bored may whine for attention.

Tend to your dog’s needs and don’t let him manipulate you with his whining. Your dog has genuine needs and also needs attention; learn to differentiate between the two. Reinforce good dog behavior. Only when the whining has stopped should you show him the love and attention that he deserves, this way he will soon learn that his whines do not produce the results that he wants.

Dog separation anxiety is one of the most common problems dog owners face. Dogs develop separation anxiety for many different reasons. Some of the most common reasons are lack of exercise, a traumatic event, or a sudden change in schedule. Dog separation anxiety symptoms are expressed in a various ways

There are plenty of different symptoms. Mild symptoms include changes in body language and whining. Dogs with severe separation anxiety may wreck furnishings or injure themselves. The majority of cases of dog anxiety can be resolved using behavior modification exercises.

What is Behavior Modification Training

Behavior Modification is a type of dog training that is used to replace on type of behavior with another. one example, Pretend your dog pulls at the end of the leash when you walk him, you can teach him to heel using obedience (the heel command), or you can teach him to walk by your side by rewarding correct behavior (heeling next to you), and correcting or ignoring bad behavior (the pulling). A major benefit about changing your dogs behavior through training is that they will act appropriately even when you are not around.

There are a number of great drills for dogs with separation anxiety. I highly recommend desensitization exercises. As you get ready to leave your home, you may observe your dog showing signs of anxiety. Your dogs understands your routine before you go by the things you do before you are gone. When your dog has determined you will go somewhere when you put on your coat, just put on your coat more often. Throughout the day, you can put on your coat, and pick up your keys, then walk to the door. When you get there, turn around and go back to what you were doing. What you are doing is removing your dogs association with you leaving to the you putting on your coat. It can take some effort, but the effort is worthwhile. Once you have completed a number of desensitization drills, your dog will be calm and happy when you leave.

Separation anxiety won’t go away on it’s own and can become a serious problem. In fact , it often gets much worse. Don’t delay treatment until your dog hurts themselves, or wrecks your property! If you want to learn the secrets of behavior modification training, and how to cure canine separation anxiety, visit http://www.dogseparationanxietyhelp.com.

house training a dog

Do you feel that house training a dog can be easy? Well, I do. Housetraining a dog or puppy can be very simple when you teach him to simply tell you when he needs to go outside to do his business. One of my favorite things to do is to simply teach your dog how to ring a bell when he needs to go outside.

…Every dog simply loves learning tricks and playing games.

This method — which I call “Ring a Bell to Go Out” — works so well because your dog warns of thinking that it was his idea all along! In order to teach your dog how to ring a bell to go outside, simply follow these simple instructions.

(By the way, if you want to see a complete step-by-step video on how this is done, go see this house training a dog entry on the Best Dog Ever website. It’s awesome!)

*Step 1. Find a bell. Use a bell that’s light weight. (This is not the time to use a heavy bell, like a cow bell.) Of course it’s important to make sure you select the right size for your particular dog. (For example, a dachshund will need a bell that smaller than a Labrador retriever would need.)

*Step 2. Hang the bell from a door knob …so the dog can easily reach it with his nose. (Remember also that different breeds will require different heights.)

*Step 3. It’s important to remember that you need to say “outside” before taking the dog out? Do you want to go outside?” Now, go out through the door, and manipulate the string so that the dog can’t help but bump into it and make it ring. (If you need to shake the string so the bell rings, shake it.) Repeat for a few days. So obviously what happens is that eventually there will be an association in your dogs mind — the sound of the bell will mean that he goes outside to do his business.

*Step 4. As soon as your dog isn’t watching you, put a small dab of peanut butter directly on the bell.

*Step 5. Wait and watch. There are generally two things that might happen …and both of them are positive! Some dogs will smell the food on the bell instantly, and go to it and ring it right away..
Perfect! Say “Outside?” …So now it’s time to get the door open, take the dog directly to the potty area, and say “go potty.* Remember to reward the dog with a food treat and praise when she potties.

Some dogs and a little extra incentive to go and find the bell.
If that happens to you try this:
Hold the bell close to the dog’s nose so the dog smells the peanut butter, licks it, and rings the bell.

You can help your dog by shaking the bell so that it makes a sound, if your dog’s touch is too light to make it actually ring.) As the bell rings, you want to say “Outside?” … Okay, now open the door, take your dog right to the potty area, and tell her to “go potty.”

While the dog is pottying, softly repeat saying “go potty.” Then, Reward the dog with praise and a small food treat.

*Step 6. As soon as the dog can ring the bell easily, without your help, that’s the time to ask your dog “Outside?”…and now it’s time to wait patiently by the door until your dog figures out what you want and rings the bell. Next, lead your dog outside while she does her business.

Learning smart methods for house training a dog is good for dogs of all ages! Don’t forget that older dogs will often times need more frequent bathroom trips. …But the bell reminds us.

Rescue dogs that have never lived inside a house, quickly learn the difference between “inside” house manners and “outside” house behaviors.

This is a great way to eliminate accidents in your home, especially if you live in a house that doesn’t have a doggie door. This trick is perfect if you take your dog with you on your travels.

Just bring the dog’s bell with you and tie it on the motel door. …you can forget about having to worry about accidents!

Dog training and dealing with house training issues

This is a post from: Just For The Dogs

Using the dogs own instincts is the best house training a dog method for your pet. This is what Crate training does. You will leave the dog confined to a small area of your house. Since dogs are naturally clean, they will not want to soil their “den” area.

Potty training dogs can be done for any age pet using these techniques, as they have worked well for all dogs. There are mistakes that many do when trying to follow this type of house training philosophy. Don’t be inconsistent with the time that you feed your dog and do not rush the process. Rewarding the animal is good practice and this can cause the house training a dog to be trained quicker but do not move too fast.

When your dog has an “accident” it can be because the animal is in his den for too long a period or the den area is too big. It could mean that your pet has not understood yet that this den area is its bed. It could also be that the dog might have a urinary infection or another medical issue. Also it could mean that your dog is bored. Being bored might cause it to drink more water and urinate more. There are other signs of boredom as well. When your dog destroys things or nibbles on things he is not supposed to, he might be bored.

Your dog could think of its den in a negative way. This might be because the den was not introduced to your pet in the right way. He might feel trapped and could show this by whining, barking or by biting things.

Get to know your dog and its needs. Make sure that the den area is safe and pleasant for your pet and provide a toilet area that is known to the dog. One of the biggest reasons dogs are given to shelters is because of “going” in the wrong place.

Yes, its cold outside, but don’t stop your dog’s agility training. Depending on where you live, there may be snow on the ground from November in March, but thats no purpose to give up your agility training. Led your training inside, suitable at your own home.

Get creative through your training locations. Do you’ve a hallway, basement, or garage? Then you have a place to train! Before it snows and your equipment is frozen to the ground, store several throughout your garage, shed, basement, or put a tarp over it. Led during one piece of equipment at a occasion, and begin your indoor training.

We do many indoor training by a Pause Table. During fact, we keep 1 in our living room for both obedience training and agility training every the event. The Pause Table is a best obstacle for developing your obedience behaviors and training agility directional instructions

Do not forget to work on your contacts. It’s easy through having a Get in touch with Trainer inside. A 3-Piece Make contact with Trainer gives you versatility; you have an A-frame side, the Pause Table, and a Dog-walk plank. Practicing your two feet on and two feet off is convenient and rapid wheter you have indoor contacts, just some minutes a day to steady your dog’s behavior.

Indoor jumping should be approached carefully. When you don’t have indoor matting, do not jump. You do not require your dog jumping on concrete or wood floors. But you could use the uprights or posts to practice your handling. Use your Sit-stay or Down-stay and practice your lines or dogs pathway by no jump bars.

Weaves can be practice indoors. Are you training with a weave-chute or straight line weaves? Five minutes a day of weave training during out the winter will have your dog weaving smoothly with springtime. You could practice weave entries and weave sends or weave recalls.

There is also a variety of mini agility equipment that can be bought, and do not need the same space as regular equipment. There are mini-teeters, mini-dog walks, and mini-A-frames. These are great obstacles for puppy training or indoor winter teaching.

Hence, in the cold winter months, do not offer up on your agility training. Whether you’re beginning a young pup, working a novice dog, or an experienced titled dog there’s always something that you could do indoors by your agility training.

Dog Training Advice

This is a post from: Just For The Dogs

Building Trust

In order to have success training your dog, you will need to establish trust between you. You’ll want to begin by making sure you got all the basics for your dog covered, like shelter, food, excercise, love and so on (and don’t forget a lot of physical affection!). This will absolutely let your dog know to trust you. And if you do all that, your dog will do the rest!

This new training endeavor can prove to be a LOT of fun. It’s a great way to get out into the world with a fun companion and build the bond. This will no doubt make your dog have so much trust in you.

Love Your Doggy

Something you want for your dog is for her to be happy enough to bring toward her only positive attention to herself instead of negative attention by behaving badly. Out of many dog training tips, this one is the most foundational. As an example, your dog will respond SO much better to you if you are persistently providing her with positive reenforcement of good behavior instead of constantly yelling at her when she resorts to bad doggy behavior.

And you definitely want this because you want a well mannered dog who is safe around other dogs and children. For that to happen, it begins with you and how well you decide to nurture your dog. An environment where your dog is not positively looked after and respected will be threatening and will lead to ALL the behaviors that people are constantly searching answers for like chewing, barking, jumping, being aggressive, biting and so forth.

That’s why helpful dog training tips will encourage well looked after and well trained doggies that get lots of structured love from their pack leaders and their family/community. And hey, a well-mannered dog is such a pleasure to be around when at home or at the park.

Correct Response

Proper dog behavior, in turn, illicits more of the same and promotes the correct response to your commands, right away, every time!

And when your dog shows this, it is up to you to make sure you give immediate praise, right away. That’s how he learns as opposed to the emotional trauma of being in trouble for things he did wrong! Responding very quickly to your dogs successes will lead to increased confidence and more good behavior. And that’s a good thing?

Dog Whispering

Dog training tips of value demand that you position yourself as alpha dog or head honcho. So, you gotta be dominant and the boss. Trust me when I say, you’re dog will be relieved if he doesn’t have to always be wondering where he stands. He will feel much better if he knows his place. This is dog psychology 101. As a dog whisperer, Cesar Millan teaches this. don’t be affraid to review 4 internet dog training courses, check this out. Being a whole other species, we need to remember and respect the differences while enjoying our similarities. And we can have a lot of fun getting into the role of pack leader as long as our actions are appropriate for pack leader and not strict, mean, and punative (always punishing or yelling at our dogs is not nice because our little frinds look up to us just like our kids do). And the beauty of this is that our dogs will respect us more AND respond better to training.

Keep It Simple Smart

Do not give command after command after command hoping your dog will finally catch on. Focus giving ONLY one command at a time, otherwise you will simply confuse the heck out of your dog.

So basically, you wanna see how they see and learn and know what she needs in order to learn what you need. To further the discovery process and uncover more Great dog training techniques, check out these great dog training tips.

All the best!

Towards Long-Lasting Boston Terrier Training

This is a post from: Just For The Dogs

For more concrete results in your Boston Terrier training, positive reinforcement is the start of the program to molding this animal into a the “IT” pet and family companion.

Very smart, sinewy and compact…Most people are easily impressed with the Boston. However, it can also be very sensitive to the atmosphere and mood around it. The dog can actually tell if its owners are feeling low or very positive. All this emphasizes the importance of giving your boston terrier the proper obedience and behavior training as soon as you can.

Everyone knows of socialization as a not-to-be-missed component of positive training, and that your dog is preferably a puppy between the ages of three weeks to three months old. But for this key to function, you need to keep in mind that the best way to communicate with the dog is to respect its pack instincts. From the early days of puppy hood, it is part and parcel of their make-up to figure who are the authority figures surrounding them. Unfortunately, it is at this critical part that most owners don’t want to know more, therefore “losing” it.

Being your typical loving owner, it is easy to get caught up showering affection on your new puppy at no cost, and no conditions. You can let them play on any furniture, jump up on anyone and anything. But the mistake , of course, is to presume that the puppy is too young to learn, you allow that behavior to go merrily freewheeling.

By treating him just like some sort of “buddy” and not as a pet, you forego teaching your dog about limits; worse, you are in danger of taking for granted something that would have stabilized the Boston Terrier training. What is this element? It is to firmly and promptly get the dog to understand your standing as authority in the pack (in fact, all human family members need to be the dog’s leaders in the pack). The omission of doing so during the dog’s earlier stages can lead to the overall difficulty in forming the dog.

But if you don’t have a Boston yet, have you at least tried to balance the pro’s and con’s of having one?If you are not after a lap dog, and need a small but strong one, then you can try seriously knowing more about the Boston Terrier. Boston Terriers will ask for your time and patience as they need to be played with to burn all that energy. They’re usually quite good with kids and the elderly. Add this all to the fact that they are capable of living up to fifteen years, and you have a dog that has undeniable need for scheduled playing time everyday, or at least some boston terrier training.

Tips to Control Dog Barking

This is a post from: Just For The Dogs

Sometimes your dog may start barking because he gets overexcited to see you, or really wants your attention, or is barking to protect you-these are all minor barking problems, and you should be able to stop them with a simple command to quiet down. If your dog suffers from any of these issues listed below, you should work with the dog on correcting these barking problems. It is too bad, but the excessive barking will not just go away on its own accord.

Here are some examples of barking problem behaviors and some ways to correct these types of dog barking problems-use the tips that are appropriate to your own dog’s behavior problem.

To correct the problem of dogs barking upon seeing a stranger or another dog somewhere within their visual range, it is necessary to block your dog’s view out of his yard. If you can move your dog behind a solid fence you will have blocked that view. As an alternative to a fence (if you have none) try moving your dog to an area of the backyard with no view of the street -you will need to put him on a lead to keep him there. If you dog is an indoor dog, you can try closing all the drapes so your dog cannot see outside anymore.

Solving the problem of your dog barking because he hears nearby dogs having a conversation, takes a hands on approach-literally. To do this, you will need to use your hand to shut your dogs mouth, and to keep it shut until your dog has submitted and is calm. He won’t be liking this much, so you will have to hold onto his collar while you do this because he may try to move away from you. Another good trick that will startle him out of barking is to spray him in the face with a small blast of water from a little spray bottle. A can of pebbles is also good for startling your dog into stopping the barking for a bit. These tricks all work to temporarily stop the barking for the time you are using them. As you have your hand over his mouth or spray him, you must also command your dog to be “quiet” or say “no barking”. At the end of a successful training to stop barking, your dog should stop when just given your verbal command.

In order to correct a dog that barks for reasons of being stressed and feeling insecure it requires a lot of attention from you through training, exercising and playing with your dog. All the activity should make your dog a happier, more confident dog, who won’t need to express his anxiety through barking.

To correct the dog barking problems cause by a bored or lonely dog, also will require increase attention by you in the way of exercising and playing and training your dog. A dog that is often left alone all day, without plenty of playing and exercising, is definitely more likely to develop this behavior. By giving your dog at least one and a half hours daily exercise, you will help a lot with his feelings of loneliness and boredom, and hopefully cut way down on his need to bark for long periods of time.

Correct the problem of your own dog barking for attention by saying a firm “no” and then turning your back to him and ignoring him for a few minutes. Don’t let your dog bully you into doing whatever he wants. The reason for this, besides the annoyance of a steadily barking dog, is that you are the Alpha dog. You will not be seen as Alpha by your dog if he can boss you around when he wants by barking at you. It is essential for training your dog that you alone are the Alpha dog

If none of these techniques works for you, the pet stores sell a few types of barking prevention collars. The first of these prevention collars is a Citronella oil collar-this works by spraying a mist of citronella oil into your dogs face when it is activated by the dog’s barking. The second type of collar works by emitting a very high pitched sound . The collars work by using aversion theory-one through a smell dog’s hate, and the other through an irritating noise.

There is even a collar that prevents barking through the application of electric shock. Frequently dog trainers have found success using these when other methods have failed with a very headstrong or stubborn dog.

Obedience training is one of the best services you can provide for your fox terrier and yourself and your family. This is both rewarding and fun and will enrich your relationship with your new puppy. Fox terrier obedience training is an ongoing process that occurs not just at specific training sessions but right through the course of your dog’s day. The lessons taught during training times should be reinforced at all times. Fox terrier obedience is just as important to your dog as food and water. That lovable and cute puppy can turn into an uncontrollable full grown dog if not given the right guidance.

Fox terrier obedience training does not teach your dog to perform party tricks; it is essential training to keep your dog – and your family – safe. Your little fur ball will learn to wait, sit, stay, lay down, heel, leave it and drop it just because you said so! Fox terrier training is a combination of both science and art. There have been many videos and books produced about dog training in general and a lot of good information can also be found online. Training is vital to teach your fox terrier the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. A dog that hasn’t had limitations set or been given instructions will not know how to behave.

Fox terrier obedience training is a very important key to having a happy, healthy, pet. Obedience training can help your fox terrier stop excessive barking, biting, and whining and is an important component of responsible dog ownership. Proper fox terrier training teaches your dog how to exist in a two-legged world, strengthens the bond between people and dogs, and keeps your family and your dog safe.

Obedience training is more than just commands. When taught correctly you and your dog will communicate via this language. It transforms your relationship from one of frustration, to one of harmony. Obedience training is a part of the social setting defined for your dog in your home. Changes in that setting and how the dog perceives his position brings about desired behavior changes.

Fox terrier obedience training will be the foundation of your pet’s acceptable social behavior. It will give you and your dog a happy and less stressful life. Fox terrier obedience training will prevent many problems from occurring and can assist in removing bad behaviors that may already exist. Many people think that obedience training is something that is carried out to make a dog perform some artificial activity on command, whereas in fact, obedience training for fox terriers that like to jump up is very helful. When your dog wants to jump up, try having him sit instead. Then your can reward him with praise and attention for sitting instead of jumping up.

Aggression in dogs is a serious behavior problem for some dog owners. Aggression includes any behavior that is meant to intimidate or harm another animal or person and can include jumping up, biting, uncontrolled barking and not obeying commands. Once a dog has grown from puppy to maturity, it will become much more difficult to train. Fox terriers rarely display aggression towards people although they can occasionally display aggression towards other dogs. Training will remedy this situation.

Boundary Training Dogs

This is a post from: Just For The Dogs

Something terrible that happened in my neighborhood last week spurred me on to write this article. A neighbor of mine had a wonderful chocolate Lab named Clyde, who has chased his last car. Everyone loved this dog, so we were all saddened by his death. It was no secret Clyde liked to chase cars, and it was a shame is owner didn’t bother to properly boundary train his dog while he had a chance.

To make sure your dog learns how to stay within the yard and not run off, you can learn how to boundary train your dog. Once you have successfully boundary trained your dog, you can be more relaxed when you have him out in the yard.A loose dog is a potential hazard to himself, whether from cars or aggressive dogs, and can also be a problem for the people he encounters.

Eliminate the problems caused by a run away dog by boundary training your dog with these few tips. It is much easier to train a puppy or older dog boundary training before any problem exists, so it is a good idea to do this training right away.Boundary training is even more relevant to those of you who don’t have a fence around the yard to keep your dog in.

Use the following tips and soon your dog will also be boundary trained.

Get the boundary training started by placing a piece of string or rope or some kind of visible boundary marker around the area you want him to stay in. Put your dog on the leash, and take a walk around the area. You should walk pretty near the perimeter but stay a couple of feet inside the boundary. If he tries to leave the yard, stop your dog from crossing the line with the “no” command, and a light tug on his leash to get his attention. When he comes back to you, praise him and give him his rewards-affection and a treat. In case he forgets himself and tries to cross the line, don’t yell or punish him-just focus on rewarding the times he does it right. Frequent repetition of the training is needed daily until your dog gets the right idea. After several days of this your smart dog will recognize the boundary you have set up for what it is supposed to be.

The second step is putting your dog on a longer lead-maybe about 20 feet long, so that he feels less controlled by you. As you walk him around the yard and he nears the line, get ready to tug and say no before he actually can cross the line. Repeat this exercise several times daily and be sure to reward him with praise and treats for not crossing the line.

Once he has learned the earlier steps here’s a good check to see how well he has learned his boundary training. Put something on the other side of the boundary that will surely tempt him to want to cross over. Have a family member or a friend (or even a volunteer teacher’s aide dog) stand on the other side of the boundary. Take him for his walk using his normal leash and as you near the temptation, be prepared to prevent him from crossing the line in case he can’t resist the temptation. He may try to cross over the boundary, but don’t worry-he just needs more training. Return to the previous lessons and keep practicing till he has it together. If he has passed this test, another step would be to throw a favorite toy or a ball across the line. If he can resist that very strong temptation, he is doing great and is ready for the last step of his boundary training.

Now it is time to test him off leash. Take him for a walk, keeping him in an off-leash heel position, and walk the inner perimeter of the boundary you’ve marked off being sure to give him lots of praise and rewards for staying with you and not trying to take off like he used to. Keep practicing the boundary training with short 15 minute sessions several times a day. You can reinforce this training strongly by practicing it each time you and your dog come out into the boundary area. If your dog hasn’t been boundary trained properly he’ll try to cross the line and you’ll need to go back to the last step.~

If you think about it, boundary training your dog is well worth the effort, especially compared to losing the dog you love. Boundary training is a good insurance against the chance of having your dog get lost, hurt or worse.
