Question: Are Small Dogs Good with Children?

The short answer: No and it depends.

Are Small dog breeds good with children? This is a raging debate between many different parties. People who place rescue dogs with families willing to adopt do not believe children are safe for small dogs. On the other hand people argue that some small dogs are good with kids.

The arguing points are valid on both sides of the spectrum as to whether or not small dogs are good with children.

People who say no.

People who believe small dogs are not good with kids look at it from a small dog’s perspective. The people feel that a child could easily harm a small dog thinking it is more like a toy, not a live breathing creature. The idea of a small dog attacking a child is just as real as a big dog attacking a child. So as far as safety for a child is concerned, it probably is pretty minimal compared to a bigger dog.

Sometimes, though, parents feel their child is ‘dog friendly’ and a small dog would be a suitable match for the family household. However, they couldn’t be more wrong.

Many times breeders and adoption agencies will refuse families with children younger than seven or eight years of age. They do not feel it is in the best interest of the small dog. They do not want traumatize the dog a second time. People may think small dogs are safe for children because they are little.

However, many children do not realize the power of their own strength that they develop as they grow. They are not aware of what little effort it can take on their part to accidentally and unintentionally cause death for a small dog.

On the flip side, some people agree that certain breeds of small dogs are safe for children to be around. Small dog breeds such as beagles, terriers, and collies are thought to be okay for children and behave just fine around them without posing any kind of threat to the child. The biggest small dogs you want to avoid, more so for the sake of the dog’s safety, are the toy breeds such as Chihuahuas.

In order to keep both child and small dog safe, if you get a small dog, be sure to monitor both the child and the dog at all times. If you cannot watch them at the same time, then place the dog in a safe room or in a crate that the child cannot gain easy access to.

As well, with proper behavioral training and enough exercise, a small dog can easily adapt and fit in with the family thus making the small dog good with the kids.

A word of warning though. A parent will need to caution their child to never put his or her face in front of a dog. This is just in case a dog, regardless of size, spooks and snaps at the child’s face, which could lead to severe medical injuries. Small dogs may not be good for kids in the long run – both for the dog’s and child’s safety. It is best to research all of your options and figure out why you really want a small dog versus a big dog or if you should get one at all.

Kids and dogs interact with each other in a playful, carefree, and trusting manner. The problem is, a child is small and therefore at potential risk when playing with the wrong pooch. There may be dominance issues related to how a canine views his place in his pack in relation to the child’s place. There’s also a risk of physical injury that can result when kids cross the line with regard to a dog’s boundaries.

In this article, we’ll explore the relationship between children and canines, and provide some helpful suggestions for ensuring their interaction is positive. You’ll learn how to select the right pooch for your child and ensure their first few weeks together are trouble-free.

Selecting The Right Pet

Every breed is different, and every individual canine has a unique temperament and set of quirks. Choosing the right pet for your family is largely a matter of knowing what to avoid.

Large breeds are not necessarily a poor choice. To be sure, some are naturally energetic, which can be dangerous if your child is young. He or she can be knocked over and injured by an overly-exuberant pooch. On the other hand, a number of large dogs are renowned for their calm demeaner. They’re content to sit quietly while children play near them; in fact, they often make perfect companions for kids.

Many parents assume that small breeds make good companions for children due to their size. Unfortunately, that’s not necessarily the case, especially if the dog is hyperactive. Some smaller canines are prone to playing too roughly, which can lead to biting or other signs of aggression.

The First Few Weeks

Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting time for children. They gravitate naturally to dogs, and are intensely curious and eager to play with them. That said, you should take a few steps beforehand to make sure the transition is smooth for everyone involved. Doing so can prevent behavioral problems in the future.

First, let your children know that they should give the puppy some space during its first week in the home. It’s okay for them to play with the pup, but let him adjust to his new setting.

Second, tell your kids that the dog will sleep in his own bed, not their beds. The latter occurrence usually serves as an omen of behavoiral problems (with the puppy).

Third, establish a set of rules that define your children’s responsibilities regarding your new pooch. These rules should include feeding, cleaning up after, and similar chores. Post these guidelines in a place where your children can easily review them.

During the first few weeks, your new canine will gradually start exploring his new home. He’ll also grow accustomed to – and fond of – your kids; the bond between them will build quickly. It’s important that you encourage your children to treat your dog respectively. Always discourage punishment, and encourage good dog behavior with treats.

Also, never leave a young child alone with your canine. Kids occasionally do things that prompt a warning from dogs. Make sure you are nearby to put a stop to any potential confrontation.

Finding a pet food store or veterinary clinic is very easy as you find them in every city and large town. These stores usually offer good products and services, but for many pet owners this is no longer good enough. Pet owners today want to buy natural pet remedies and foods for their pets and for this they need to shop at a natural pet supply store.

You might be surprised to find how different “mainstream” pet supplies are from natural pet health products. Many pet owners have really learned a lot about what is good for their pets and what can shorten their lives and make them more likely to get sick. There are surely very few people who are not aware of the furor caused in the past few years due to major pet food brands having to recall pet food that has been contaminated.

This has brought it sharply home to pet owners that valued pets need to be protected and fed the proper foods and to use natural pet remedies. This had made natural pet supply stores extremely popular as people demand natural and organic foods, supplements, medicines and accessories for their pets. Stores like Vetionx provide all natural pet health products.

Finding A Natural Pet Supply Store Online

Many natual pet supply stores work almost exclusively online, as their customer base can become larger than if they had a physical location. Of course, you can still find natural pet supply stores in your area. You might find that the natural pet supply stores which you find online have the largest selection of all the organic or natural pet care products to meet your needs. When people switch to natural pet products they often are wary as they feel they do not have enough knowledge and this is where an online natural pet supply store is invaluable. All the websites of the natural pet supply stores have extensive categories that give advice to clients as well as frequently asked questions sections.

You can also easily browse the categories for natural pet food, organic pet food, pet health products, natural, herbal and holistic pet medication as well as natural pet remedies. The prices at every online natural pet supply store are highly competitive and in general, less costly than getting natural pet medications from your local vet. Some online natural pet supply stores actually offer coupons and coupon codes as well as special promotions to make it less expensive to buy what your pet needs. You can aslo read reviews, such as Vetionx review. Shopping online at a natural pet supply store is simply the most convenient and affordable option for most pet owners that want natural pet remedies for their pets.

The most frequently reported concerns are dog peeing in house issues, best dog training, puppy crate training, leash training puppy, dog bark control, how to stop dog digging, aggressive dog behavior, dogs separation anxiety and how to stop puppy biting.

Dog Training Tips

Sometimes dog training can appear to be a mean activity, because you are in effect teaching your puppy to become independent, whereas it is most likely in his nature to be more like a pack animal. At times you may feel that your pet hates being trained. But sooner or later if you persist with your efforts, he will most likely come to understand that he is part of your pack instead.

Best Dog Training Programs

You can’t beat a well reviewed step-by-step training program. These are some of the two best dog training resources that I have reviewed:

When planing a family trip there may be several occasions in which your dog will not be able to travel with you. You might be forced to take a business trip, want to go on vacation with your spouse, or need to visit family in another state. Ideally, you would be able to leave your pooch with a trusted friend or family member while you’re away. Unfortunately, that’s not always possible.

When you have to leave your canine behind, and cannot find someone you trust to care for him in your absence, a kennel may be your best option. Some are good while others are decidedly less so. In this article, we’ll offer a few suggestions to help you identify trustworthy facilities that can make the transition as easy as possible for your pooch.

Tip 1 – Tour The Facility

Before you leave on your trip, invest the time to tour the boarding facility at which you intend to leave your dog. Most kennels will be happy to oblige as long as you make an appointment.

When you visit, take note of the smell. If you notice a pervasive odor of urine or feces, that suggests a sanitation issue. Also, check out the floors and bowls being used by the other canines. Are they dirty? Do they appear as if they’re not regularly cleaned? Take note of the bedding and crate sizes. Are they clean? Do the other dogs seem comfortable, or are they stressed? These are all subtle indications that a given facility may not be adequate for your canine.

Tip 2 – Talk To The Employees

You’ll learn a lot about the care provided to pets who are boarded at various facilities by speaking with the staff. You might be surprised to discover that the employees who are tasked with feeding and caring for the dogs harbor a disdain for their jobs. It’s hard to hide. If you notice that any of the staff have such an outlook, take your pooch to another facility.

Tip 3 – Ask Questions In Advance

Take a moment to ask the kennel’s manager to explain a normal day for the canine boarders. Ask how many meals they receive, how much time they spend outside their cages, and who works with them. Ask whether there is a veterinarian on duty, or if the facility works closely with an emergency clinic. You should also double check the vaccination requirements necessary for all pets prior to arrival.

Tip 4 – Pack Special Supplies (If Necessary)

If your dog has special needs, be sure to pack the appropriate supplies for the kennel’s staff. For example, you can ask the facility’s employees to feed your pooch a special diet. You should also provide the kennel with any medications your dog may need. If usually better to bring supplies with you, althought it is possible to call and make arrangements for such requests after dropping your dog off. You might want to even leave your dog’s favorite brand of dog treats, to remind him of home.

Leaving your dog at a boarding facility can cause him stress, especially if it is his first time. Try to make his stay as comfortable as possible by carefully choosing the right facility.

Most canines hate to see their owners leave them. They would rather know their owners are nearby and able to address their needs (i.e. for food, attention, etc.) whenever necessary. In some cases, dogs will become extremely anxious when left alone or separated from their owners. This is known as separation anxiety (SA).

The behavior can manifest in various ways, which often makes it difficult to recognize. If the behavior is not properly identified, it cannot be shaped or modified. Sadly, separation anxiety is one of the most common reasons people abandon their canines.

Here, we’ll describe a number of signs that can allow you determine if your pooch is having trouble dealing with being left alone. We’ll also explore the reasons behind the behavior and provide a few tips for modifying it.

Identifying The Signs

Every dog is unique and the extent to which they suffer from SA will vary. Your pooch might become increasingly agitated the longer he is left alone. Once you leave him, he may begin pacing back and forth, drooling, barking, and even howling. If he grows more anxious, he might start chewing your furniture, or destroying things around your house. In severe cases, your dog might begin to urinate or defecate in your home.

There are a few telltale signs that imply your canine is becoming anxious when he is separated from you. For example, you might notice him following you around the house. That’s his way of making sure you’re still nearby. He may periodically check whether you’re home before returning to his toys or food. Another indication is that your pooch becomes frantic when you prepare to leave him.

What Triggers Separation Anxiety?

There are numerous reasons why a dog might become overly anxious when his owner is away. For instance, if he’s been mistreated by a previous owner, or has been adopted by numerous people, he may feel insecure in his position. That is, because he has been abandoned in the past, a canine might fear his owner will fail to return for him.

Separation anxiety can also manifest if your dog has never enjoyed interaction with other people. Left alone, he may become worried that he has lost your companionship.

Tips For Modifying The Behavior

It’s important to emphasize that what your pooch does as the result fo his anxiety is not meant to “get even” with your for leaving him. Don’t punish him. Instead, take positive steps to gradually shape his behavior.

For example, reward him with a treat when he is calm. If he shows too much excitement when you return home, say “relax” and provide a treat when he calms himself. You can also desensitize your canine to the routine you normally go through before leaving your house. For instance, put on your shoes a half hour before departing. You should also downplay your leaving; ignore your dog 10 to 20 minutes before departing.

The key thing to remember is that the signs associated with separation anxiety (i.e. barking, urinating, etc.) are not done in anger or aggression. Take a supportive, positive approach to slowly eliminate your canine’s concern.

Undomesticated dogs live together in dog packs. These dog packs have one dog that is the leader. Your dog sees your family as his pack. The natural instinct for your dog is to be the leader of the pack. Your dog will attempt to take on the position as the pack leader, or alpha dog, if you have not assumed that role with your dog.

The alpha dog, within the pack, makes all the major decisions. The attention of the dogs in the pack is entirely on the alpha dog. The alpha dog is very protective of his role as the leader of the dog pack. Usually the alpha leader will never give up his position voluntarily.

Is there a definite understanding of who the alpha dog is in your household? If it is not you, your dog will take the position on himself. An alpha dog can be either male or female, gender does not matter.. Since females tend to be smaller in size male dogs are more often the alpha leader. A female dog will take on the role of alpha dog if you do not assume the leadership role. A dog that has taken on the role of the alpha dog leader can make living within the bounds of a human family intolerable.

For information on how to train your dog, and establish yourself as the alpah leader take a look at: Dog Obedience Guide

When your dog feels that he is the alpha dog within your family he will exhibit bad or destructive behavior. You will have difficulty controlling your dog and he will be aggressive towards other dogs if he feels that he is the alpha dog leader within his sphere of influence.

Confusion as to who the alpha dog is, in your family, leads your dog to think of himself as your equal. It is very important that you display the qualities of an alpha dog leader all the time. It is through your confidence, body language and tone of voice that you demonstrate your abilities as an alpha dog leader. You must be comfortable as the alpha dog leader if your dog is to accept you in that role.

Just a reminder that if you are looking for a great free website about dogs and other dog training secrets click here: Dog Training Guide

The alpha dog maintains his dominance through small deliberate acts. An example of this is that the alpha leader is always the first one in the pack to eat. This could mean that there is little left to eat when it is the pack’s turn to eat. Also, the alpha dog will nudge its way through a crowd of dogs instead of going around. Those things within the pack’s area of influence are controlled by the alpha dog.

Why is it important to understand what the alpha dog does in a dog pack? This is your family, why should you be concerned with the dog hierarchy and its functioning? The answer to that question is obvious. Force or abuse, either physical or verbal, should never be used with your dog. You become the alpha dog leader in the eyes of your dog by imitating the practices of an alpha dog.

The best time to establish yourself as the alpha dog is with a puppy. This is especially true if that adult dog has been its own alpha dog leader. Although it is easy to establish alpha leadership with a puppy that does not mean alpha dog leadership will always be your position. You must guard your role as alpha dog 24 hours a day.

If you are looking for the best dog food you need to pay close attention to the ingredients as they are much more important.Choosing the appropriate dog food can enhance your canine’s skin, eyes, teeth, energy, and overall health.
When shopping for dog food make sure you check the ingredients list stated on the packaging.
Everyone acknowledges that dogs like meat. They are carnivores. In order to provide your dogs with the amount of meat it requires you should make sure that meat is the main ingredient in the food you are providing.Stay away from foods that are made of meat by products. These foods substitute items such as feathers, skin, and beaks for real meat.Dog food containing soya should also be avoided as research shows that an increasing number of dogs are allergic or intolerant to it.
Pet owners who recognise the benefits in feeding their dog a good quality pet food are also reaping the benefits of more specialist food which can target a certain aspect of the animal’s health or physical appearance. The variety of specialist dog food is growing and there are foods which can for example help to clean your dog’s teeth whilst she chews, or food ideal for dogs with sensitive skin.
Oils also form an essential part of a dogs diet and oils containing Omega 6 and 3 can help to boost your dogs health and skin quality.
If you have an active dog and are struggling to satisfy her appetite then you should consider purchasing foods high in both protein and carbohydrates as these will help to keeo her energy levels high.As your dog gets older you must alter the diet. An older dog does not require the same amount of caolories or carbs as a younger more active dog.
When buying canned food for your dog, be careful about avoiding foods that list water as a main ingredient. The only benefit of a dog food high in water is seen in your pocket. Your dog will not be eating a healthy and nutritious meal with such food.Wet food is fine to feed to your dog, but in order to keep her teeth in good condition you really need to provide crunchy sticks or large bones for chewing.
A high quality dog food should not break the bank and really will benefit your dog in terms of overall health and well-being.While theses foods are often higher priced, the additional cost that you pay is well worth the positive difference that you will see in your dog.

Natural flea control for dogs doesn’t have to be that complicated if you know the proper steps. Your goal should be to prevent fleas on your dog without using the harmful flea control chemical sprays and gels. There are many dangerous chemicals in flea control sprays such as cythioate, fentlilon and imidacloprid. These harmful chemicals are called “neurotoxins” and may make your dog really sick. You’ll see on flea spray directions that it says do not get the flea spray on your body. Now if the chemicals in the spray are harmful to you, you can be pretty sure they are going to be harmful to your dog.

Here are some tips on natural flea control for dogs.

The first thing in flea control for dogs is to check your dog for fleas. I bet you will not see any even if you are looking very closely. Grab a paper towel, soak it in water and put it under your dog as your dog is on all fours. Brush your dog in a downward fashion so that anything that falls off will fall down onto the wet napkin. If you see these little black dots that turn a reddish color when they get wet, this is flea poop, and your dog has fleas.

After that, I want you to realize that 90% of the fleas actually infest your house and only 10% of the fleas are on your dog! Vacumming your house regularly and keeping it clean is a big part of natural flea control for dogs.

Also keep in mind that feeding your dog a very healthy dog food daily will greatly reduce the chances of it ever getting a flea infestation. Healthy dog food gives your dog a strong immune system that is able to repel fleas on its own. Feeding the dog you love unhealthy dog food weakens the immune system which allows the fleas to prosper. You can discover if your dog is truly eating a healthy diet at the link above.

Finally, a great way to implement natural flea control for dogs is get a bandanna for your dog and spray it weekly with essential oils that act as a natural flea repellent. Some of these natural flea control for dog oils include lavender, citronella, cedar wood, tea tree, peppermint and sage oils.

Dog grooming home solutions are an alternative to professional grooming services, and many pet owners see it as a way of saving money. There are pros and cons to dog home grooming, since the grooming activity is time consuming. Statics show that short-haired small breeds are the most compatible with dog grooming home conditions. Any dog that requires complex grooming, special maintenance and hair cutting is better handled professionally than at home, because the owner may lack the skills to cope with the task.

Equipment could be a problem with dog grooming home trials. Without a minimum of supplies the operation is not possible. Brushes, clippers or grinders and even a grooming table are actually considered basic. Scissors and combs are optional, although on many occasions they are a must. And finally, let’s not forget about the special dog shampoos meant to kill flees and ticks or keep them away. Dog grooming home practice comes with the responsibility for the pet’s health condition, therefore, don’t take it lightly.

Look for tips and suggestions related to dog grooming home conditions. Try to find out about the possibly special needs of the breed and talk to the veterinarian if you notice any injury or health problem under the dog’s coat. When left untreated or neglected because they are not noticed in time, lots of apparently harmless bumps on the dog’s hair could become real health problems. The advantage of professional grooming here is that such cases are easier to find and signal on thorough cleaning. Pay the same attention to the nails, teeth, eyes and ears as you pay to brushing and bathing.

Nail trimming is necessary at least once a month, depending on how short you cut the dog’s claws. When cutting too short, vein injuries may be caused; hence, be extremely cautious during the procedure. Dog grooming home care takes a lot of patience: a gentle and loving treatment is essential to make the dog allow you to handle its paws. In fact, you need to take breaks while nail trimming and offer small treats to your dog. We can thus conclude that dog grooming home practices are really time consuming even if money saving. The choice is up to you!
