Dog Grooming At Home

Many pet owners prefer dog grooming home solutions to professional grooming; in times of financial crisis any saving is welcome. There are advantages and disadvantages about dog home grooming, since the grooming activity is time consuming. Some dogs are easier to groom than others, and statistics indicate that most dog grooming home solutions are put into practice by people who own small and medium short-haired breeds. Any dog that requires complex grooming, special maintenance and hair cutting is better handled professionally than at home, because the owner may lack the skills to cope with the task.

Another issue with dog grooming home solutions is equipment. Anyone who grooms the pet at home needs a minimum of supplies and tools for the operation. Grinders, brushes, clippers and even a grooming table are actually considered basic. Scissors and combs are optional, although on many occasions they are a must. And finally, let’s not forget about the special dog shampoos meant to kill flees and ticks or keep them away. Dog grooming home practice is a responsibility that cannot be taken lightly or treated superficially because this may have serious repercussions on the dog’s health.

Look for suggestions and tips to learn more about dog grooming home challenges. The vet may provide recommendations on how to care for special breeds or how to handle an injury under the pet’s fur. When left untreated or neglected because they are not noticed in time, lots of apparently harmless bumps on the dog’s hair could become real health problems. Thorough cleaning prevents skin disease and keeps the animal in a great shape. Moreover, do not resume the dog grooming home routine to brushing and occasional baths, because the nails, the teeth, the eyes and ears require attention and care too.

Nail trimming should be performed once a month at least, depending on the length of the pet’s nails. When cutting too short, vein injuries may be caused; hence, be extremely cautious during the procedure. Dog grooming home care therefore requires lots of patience: you have to treat the dog gently because few pets like their paws touched. In fact, you need to take breaks while nail trimming and offer small treats to your dog. In conclusion, you may save money with dog grooming home solutions, but you’ll definitely put time and effort into it. The choice is all yours!

From my experience it can be very difficult to groom your own dog… at first only though! My dog has gotten more relaxed when I groom him, it was difficult at first… but now my dog enjoys being groomed =D The more experience you have with your dog and grooming her or her, the easier it gets for sure!

    Till then,

    Jean

    Hi,
Yes I groom my own dogs, well that’s because I’m a groomer. As far as the human razors no those are for people not dogs and no there not the same the motors are different and will burn up very quick. Grooming is not something you learn by watching a show. It takes practice and teaching by a professional.

Home grooming can be challenging, takes time and effort, but once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s not to bad and gives you a chance to spend some time with your pet.

I have two Wheaten Terriers. One loves to be brushed, and the other hates any sort of grooming. The tough one especially hates her nails being clipped. The groomer told us to work with her on it. How? As soon as you pull out the trimmer and take her paw she freaks out. Small treats work slightly but not much.

I attempted to groom my dog once to save a bit of money – never again! I never realised what a difficult job it is, and as you mention above, the amount of equipment you need to buy.

I now have a great relationship with a local mobile groomer who even comes to my house. She’s fantastic, and my dog actually seems to enjoy it, which he certainly didn’t when I tried it!

A variety of slicker brushes, rakes, combs of different sizes, Mar coat king, furminator, and a good quality pair of nail trimmers can make up the rest of your kit. The thing that you need most is the knowledge of using this equipment in an efficient and humane manner.

Until recently, I groomed my dog. The biggest problem I had was trimming his nails – I was never too sure how close to trim them without getting into the quick. Because of this, I have been taking him to a \"professional\" groomer. Any other tips on nail trimming would be greatly appreciated.

When I got my first dog, I had a lot of problems trying to groom him at home. I think a professional groomer would not have accepted him anyway, and I really didn’t want to have to sedate him in order to groom him. After much trial and error, I wanted to summarize the things that worked for me, so that hopefully, it can be of help to others.

Brushing is key and you need to start when they are very little kittens so they are used to getting brushed in places like their belly. Most cats don’t like having their belly brushed, but if you start early and use treats as an incentive a kitten will learn to accept it. Otherwise, the cat will resist this part of grooming.

To me, the issue of dog grooming must not be taken casually. These innocent animals do not demand grooming every now and then. Their basic grooming is done either occasionally or on a rare basis. Secondly, depending upon the breed and the necessity of the situation, one must resort to professional groomers. Aspects like financial crunch could be overlooked.

Although we are not pro groomers we like to send our home boarding dogs back looking good. The dog may enjoy running through mud, and in one recent case cow poo. Returning a messy dog to its owners is not an option.

I have to say that I have a lot of dogs with different breeds, I am happy if I see them that they are playing with each other, even my kids love to look at them, maybe just because they are very cute and yet fun to be with. When it comes to grooming I assure that my dogs would have a regular routine, being clean must always be taken into consideration

There are a few tricks of the trade that all professional groomers use to give your dog that great look when they leave the shop. These simple little steps help your dog feel more comfortable and look better until the next trip to the groomer. If you are not squeamish it is possible to complete these grooming extras at home so that you can give your pooch that just from the groomers polished look.

Different types of dog coats require different grooming methods and equipment to maintain his coat in great condition. It however is important to understand that grooming is only part of the dog maintenance picture and that exercise and good nutrition are equally important in ensuring that your dog lives a long and healthy life.

I groom my 10 month mini schnauzer myself. I wanted to make sure he was never mistreated. It has taken me a few times to get him looking like he should, but I will love him no matter what he looks like. What size blade should be used for a summer cut?

You should check your dogs ears periodically while dog grooming. Dogs with droop ears are especially susceptible to fungus, waxy ears, and ear mites. Check them at least weekly. Infected dog ears can lead to further complications. Your dog may cause an ear hematoma by breaking a blood vessel while shaking his head in response to the discomfort.

I just use a simple tip for dog grooming at home.
Have fun! While grooming your dog does not sound like a great deal of fun, try to do the best you can to make it a fun experience for your dog. Try playing with her, petting her and talking to her in a cheery tone. Who knows, with time and practice you and your dog might have fun during your grooming sessions.
