I guess it is a bit like the old 'pavlov's dog' story where the dog learns to associate the bell ringing with food. I would be a bit worried about the dog quickly learning to take advantage of this. Our cats know to scratch the door when they want to go outside. Unfortunately they abuse this freedom and ask to go outside throughout the day, even if it is only to sit outside for a bit.
