How To Stop Dogs Whining
A puppy will continue to whine when it is distressed or requires attention as it grows into a dog. A puppy is usually one of a litter and feels a sense of belonging to its litter. If a puppy becomes separated from its litter its whines are a sign of its distress and it is letting the litter know that it needs to be rescued.
When the puppy is removed from its litter to become a member of your family it may feel extreme distress at being removed from its familiar surroundings and former family. It will whine to communicate its distress to you.
You should start to train your dog not to whine at this time. If you pay attention to its whining you are reinforcing this action and the dog continues to believe that if it whines it gets the attention it wants. On the other hand it is important that you have taken care of the dog’s needs before you try to stop a dog from whining. Always ensure that your dog has food and water and is comfortable and is not trying to communicate to you that he is thirsty or hungry. Your dog should not whine when it is eating, running or going to the toilet and if it does it will need to be seen by a vet.
You must not neglect your dog and you must spend time with him and play with him. If you spend time with him when he is quiet and not whining it will reinforce good behavior.
Once your dog has adapted to you – its new family – it may suffer from separation anxiety if you leave it. Separation anxiety in dogs is not uncommon. Dogs are pack animals by nature so remember that when you leave it it may feel quite anxious. If you put your dog outside before you go out try spending a few minutes with it in the outside environment and make sure you leave it toys to play with. The dog will soon learn that being outside can be fun, too.
Listen to your dog’s whines and you’ll start to understand what it is he is trying to tell you. Your dog could be trying to communicate to you that he is hungry, thirsty, hot, cold, bored, lonely, wanting to go outside to relieve himself, or he may be in pain.
Provide your dog with plenty of stimulation and exercise. Your dog is a sociable animal and you should take him for walks, play with him and take him to dog parks so that he can learn to socialize with other dogs. Dogs are intelligent creatures and require exercise and stimulation or they can easily become bored. A dog that is bored may whine for attention.
Tend to your dog’s needs and don’t let him manipulate you with his whining. Your dog has genuine needs and also needs attention; learn to differentiate between the two. Reinforce good dog behavior. Only when the whining has stopped should you show him the love and attention that he deserves, this way he will soon learn that his whines do not produce the results that he wants.

I would think whining would be tough for many dog owners to discourage. When you hear your dog whining, it’s only natural to want to try to help him in some way. It makes sense that always attending to that whining will create a pattern.
Removing this habit from your dog’s behavior is very similar to the way you stop a child from whining and that is to ignore the dog while it is whining, and attend to it when there is silence. If, at any time, you do respond to the dog when it is whining, the dog sees this as being rewarded for the behavior.
Training to stop your dog’s whining works best when you start early. Stopping your dog’s whining simply means teaching them to be more comfortable.
Having a new puppy can be a very enjoyable experience. Almost everyone likes puppies because they are just so cute and adorable. However, things can take a dip when your puppy just keeps on whining non stop.

Any chance these tips will work for my kids? That being said minimal dog whining can actually be a nice heads up for your dog to learn. I usually own Labs and haven’t really had one which did it excessively. I am guessing this is more a problem with smaller dogs? Or certain breads?

first of all, in this new era of dog as a pet is very different about 10th century ago. dogs is more often use as a protector to human or a good company to partner with. rather than now, dogs or any pets is a part of our home community.

In many ways a dog’s behavior is similar to that of a child’s. If you continue to respond to whining the child (or dog) will realize this is the way to get what they want. That being said, it is important to know the different types of whining and respond accordingly.
Like Kathleen said, you have to be stern sometimes so the dog knows you won\’t give in to it\’s every whim. I found it worked great, and the genuine whines for pain and such are quite obvious so can act on them immediately.

The most important factor is to avoid giving into the whining behavior. If, at any time, you do respond to the dog when it is whining, the dog simply understands that it has been rewarded for the behavior. Stay firm and respond only when the dog is behaving quietly.

Great article, as with children stopping your dog/puppy from whining can take time and patience, but well worth perservering. I think all parents and dog owners alike can become stressed and very impatient with whining!

Great points. Dog separation anxiety is the same separation anxiety that children go through when they leave home to start attending school, or when parents go off to work and leave the child with a baby sitter or at day care. It can cost a lot of damage to you and your home if not prevented.

Great article on whining. Unfortunately, too many people are either too impatient or too concerned with their puppy whining to fix it. The puppy learns early in life how to get his or her way. As a trainer, I see a whining dog and I see other issues as well.
