Methods to Use to Stop Dog Chasing

July 9, 2009 | Filed Under: Dog Training

There are many different important issues that dog owners have to address with their dogs. Some of these involve barking problems, digging problems and sometimes jumping up on people. The best way to solve these issues is to prevent them before they start, training puppies to be very obedient and live up to expectations through consistent reinforcement of the proper behaviors.  Another training issue that sometimes comes up is to stop dog chasing since it can be dangerous to the dog as well as the individuals involved.  There are different methods to use to stop dog chasing and preventing this issue requires that the individual be consistent with whatever method he chooses to use.

Prevention

One way to stop dogs from chasing cars is to never allow the dog to be outside without supervision and a leash.  Dogs should never be allowed to run freely outside since they endanger themselves and others when they come near the road.  Even if the individual lives in a rural area where there are not many cars, the dog should be trained to stay within its yard, or territory, so that it does not get into the road and cause an accident.  This will also stop a dog from chasing individuals that come around the dog’s territory.Allowing a dog to chase people or other animals is endangering the dog as well as other creatures. This also helps to create aggression in the dog, something that dog owners do not want to foster in their family dog.

When the dog is chasing the owner or playing with him, the owner should never give the dog any reinforcement of that behavior.  Even though playing chase can be fun, it creates aggressive behavior in the dog as well as the chasing behavior that the owner would not want to occur around visitors to the home.  The way to stop dog chasing is to refuse to run away from the dog when he tries to play in this manner. The individual should always turn his or her back to the dog and refuse to give the dog any attention when it exhibits this behavior. When the dog decides to calm down, then the individual should turn his attention to the dog in other to give it praise.Another way to help to reinforce good behavior and stop dog chasing is to tell the dog to sit when it is in the process of starting the chase behavior.  When the dog sits, the owner should give it attention so that the positive behavior is reinforced and the negative behavior is avoided.

The alternating of this behavior is problematic because I don’t think a dog can make the distinction between chasing and running. I take my dog to the local dog beach and it’s part of play.

I that yes, its all about disipline from a very early age. Sure as puppies they can play around – but once they’re older you have to be strict. They’ll love you for it eventually :)

I used to have to walk a 13 stone great dane called vedda, and he chased all dogs and even small children! the only think to do was wrap his lead around a lamp post and cower in the corner cause he would take you whether you liked it or not otherwise! such a huge dog! – bless, miss him!

Yes, It’s really important to take care of whole dog behavior.

Don’t expect something easy to do and such. They are animal after all. so owner has to train and whatever owner train the dog will capture.

I bike a lot and dogs are usually not a problem.. however once in a while a dog will run after me. And even in the presence of the owners. The problem is never really the dog it’s the irresponsible owners.
