Common Reasons for Dog Barking Problems

I got up this morning thinking about how much uncontrolled dog barking really bothered me. That is due to laying awake listening to my neighbor’s insane pack of dogs barking at coyotes all night long. I had all night long to think about the many nearby dogs that suffered from a variety of barking issues. It became apparent that my normally peaceful neighborhood,  has more than its share of occasional dog barking madness.

I have written a short list of just some of the commonest reasons that cause dogs to bark in excess . If your dog presents you with any of these types of barking problems, you will need to work with your dog to correct the problem. It is too bad, but this barking problem isn’t going away without some work by you.

  • One very common reason that a dog will start barking is when it sees another dog or a stranger somewhere within its visual range.Dogs instinctively want to guard and protect their territory and family so this behavior is quite understandable. This becomes an issue if the dog does not stop its barking after even after the stimulus has been long gone. He gets a form of positive reinforcement when the other dog or human has moved away because in his mind he has scared the dog or person away.
  • Many times the problems start when dogs start having a long-distance conversation with other neighborhood dogs that just goes on way too long.  You can train your dog to stop doing this if he is one of those talkative dogs. The issue of problem dog barking should be corrected, because it affects your neighbors as well as you.
  • If a dog is feeling no self confidence and is insecure and stressed out, it is more likely that he will bark for just about any reason at all, even totally insignificant ones. Dogs like this, who feel insecure will start barking just out of nervous anxiety. Unless they are with their masters, this kind of dog barking problem can happen throughout the day or night. My good friend’s dog was such a nervous Nellie that it would bark if a leaf fell down form a nearby tree. Obviously this dog was the epitome of nervousness. All this barking about nothing, made it hard to be around the dog and relax at the same time.
  • Many times dogs that are really bored and feeling lonely will start to shout out their frustration with non-stop barking tirades-sort of  like they are going on a rant.  Dogs that are left all alone most of the time without attention and interaction are the obvious candidates for this barking problem.
  • Occasionally your dog may bark non-stop at you to play with them or feed them or something, and he won’t stop until he gets it-no matter if you are already working on something else. If the dog respected its master as the Alpha dog, he would not be trying that. the problem with letting this happen, is that in your dog’s mind he is training you-not the other way around. My own Lab used to enjoy bossing me around when she wanted to play-she did have me fairly well trained at one time, till I realized it was a problem.

Try out these tips, and it should help you control your dog’s barking excessively problems. For more advice on solving dog behavior problems or obedience training tips please check out my review of the best on line training guide.

Another reason dogs bark repeatedly is because they have learned that it “works”. If your neighbor’s dog barks at you when you come into the back yard, and you eventually go back into the house (which you always do!), it learns that barking at you works…it accomplishes what the dog wanted, which is to make you go away.
