House Break Your Puppy Using the Crate Method

Bringing home a new puppy is always an exciting and fun time for the family. The whole family loves playing with the new puppy. I know the one down side of a new puppy that no one likes-cleaning up after him. Try using the crate training method for house training your new puppy-it is definitely the easiest and best way. I used to do it the old fashioned newspaper on the floor way (with predictably “crappy” results). The paper method did work in a manner of sorts, but it was a lot more work and occasionally my puppy would somehow miss the papers. The dark night I stepped on one of these misses, deviously hidden on the way to the bathroom by my sneaky puppy, was the night I decided to give crate training a try.

You will avoid having the accidents that will inevitably happen with other house training systems.  To properly use the crate training system the puppy must stay inside his crate unless someone is paying attention to him (for example during playtime, or feeding he should always be supervised). I have found that if I don’t supervise  my puppy pretty closely, I’ll be giving an accident an opportunity to happen, and as they say “accidents happen”.

  • Crate training puppies will work best if you keep the crate and the puppy inside it near you whenever possible. For example, if you are at home working in your office, keep him in the crate in your office with you.  By being close to the puppy you’ll know when it is time to take him out for relief. Don’t let him out frequently just because he is bored, but be sure to let him out if it seems like it is time for potty .
  • Watch for signs of the puppy waking up from one of his naps-they always have to go potty right after waking up.  You will also notice your puppy will relieve himself within about 30 minutes at most after eating and drinking, so don’t put him back in the crate until that has happened. If you always bring him to the same area to relieve himself and reward him for a job well done, you will be positively reinforcing him to go where you want him to learn to go.
  • It is good to try to create a routine of  eating, playing, exercise and training so the puppy gets plenty of stimulation when he is not in his crate. If he is tired out, there is a good chance he might sleep the next 2 hours and not have any boredom issues before it is time for the next fun break.
  • Make sure you are staying consistent with the crate training method as that is a key factor for a quicker success. If you aren’t good about keeping him in his crate when unsupervised, accidents are going to happen. Even after you clean up the evidence, the puppy can still smell those “marked” spots and he will be more likely to repeat the behavior.  If you find the occasional pile or puddle, do not yell or hit your puppy-he won’t understand why you are doing so. If you do catch him in the act you should firmly say “No”  and try to get him to finish outside in his spot if possible.  Always remain on the positive side, praising and reward, but not yelling or hitting. Like anything else, the closer you adhere to the crate training system’s methods, the quicker and better the progress you will see.

The crate training technique was so much simpler and neater and easier that the paper on the floor method. Maybe my pup was a quick learner, but within a couple weeks or so, he was house training.  Don’t let them out at night just for whining when they are bored-only for real potty breaks. If you always make the crate seem like a den, rather than a place to put your puppy when you are mad at him, he will have a good attitude about going in there, and you shouldn’t have the whining problem some puppies have when in the crate.

For your new puppy, be smart and use the crate training method for house training your little buddy. We have our dog in a crate and he seems not to mind it. I think the crate method has worked best for us with all of our dogs…for what its worth.

I totally agree with the crate training method. I have recently got a pup and we were finding it really difficult without a crate so we got one and it has made life a whole lot easier. No one ever told me puppies are harder than babies lol. Alot of people say crates are cruel but they wouldnt make them if they were a bad thing. They help the owners to train their pups.
