Puppy Separation Anxiety and Medication
Canine separation anxiety is among the most prevalent behavioral problems in dogs. Dogs are social. If they haven’t gotten used to to being alone they can become nervous. There are a number of different medication to relieve dog anxiety and lessen symtoms thanks to modern science. These anti-anxiety medications, such as chlomicalm, adjust your dogs brain chemistry by blocking some chemical receptors that cause anxiety.
You will need to visit your vet in order to get anti-anxiety medication for you dog. Your veterinarian may need to do a blood test, and will check your dog for a number of underlying health problems that can stress your dog out such as mange, fleas, or skin rashes Be sure to follow your vets instructions on dosage.
When you first use medication for separation anxiety in dogs , it can take a while before the you notice a change in your dogs symptoms. Most dogs will respond to anti-anxiety medication within a couple of weeks. Medicating your dog will not solve their behavioral problem, it will only lessen the symptoms. If you take your dog off the medication, their behavior will return to the way it was before their prescription.
Anti-anxiety medication is a useful tool for overcoming canine separation anxiety. If your dog hurts themselves, destroys your furniture, or pees or poos inside, while you are away, speak to your veterinarian. It is not a cure, it’s a training aid. You can use it to lessen your dogs symptoms so that they will be calm enough to respond to behavior modification training. Your ultimate goal should be to relieve your dogs anxiety, then take them off the medication. It gets expensive!
Your dog will learn to be calm when you are away with Behavior Modification. I have seen far too many people think that medication alone is the answer, then fail. Remember – medication is a tool, not the final answer!
