Training for Small Dog Breeds

Most people who choose a smaller dog for a pet, do so to enjoy the company of a little companion around the house. Because your small dog will be a house pet, his obedience training is an important issue.

Often a smaller dog is both intelligent and headstrong, and will probably try to test you to see how much they can get away with. Make sure you do a good job training your small pet-to show him how is in charge.

Training your dog when he is just a puppy is the best way to get started-thus avoiding any habituated bad behavior problems. If you have a new puppy, it is a  very good idea to start your little pup’s training  by bringing him to a group puppy training class.

In addition to beginning to train your new pet, the group puppy training classes also do the import job of socializing the puppies. Socializing your puppy helps him avoid becoming aggressive later on. By being in social groupings with other people and their puppies, he learns more about appropriate social behavior. In nature, this feedback is how the puppies learn what there place is within their packs.

Isolation from contact with other dogs and people increase the chances of a dog growing up to become aggressive. Giving  your dog lots of guidance through obedience training is the best way to avoid problem behaviors from occurring. Do  a good job of  training your little pal, and you will also be able to correct other behavior problems common to excitable smaller breeds, such as excessive barking and nipping.

Just like with the larger breeds, use only positive reinforcement training techniques when training your smaller dog. Be sure never to use harsher correction techniques, such as hitting or yelling at your dog. These harsher techniques will end up hurting your training efforts and are not good for helping your dog trust you.

By using a good dog training program, you will learn about how dogs communicate with each other. By learning to understand a dog’s point of view, you can avoid making the same common training mistakes everyone else makes (such as treating your dog as if he were human), and have good results much more easily and quickly.

You must use the right dog training techniques to get the fast and effective results you need. By using the correct training methods, you can become your dog’s Alpha leader-and earn his trust, confidence and respect. After your dog has recognized you as the Alpha leader, he becomes very  eager to follow your lead.

Many small dog are prone to nervousness, and act out with aggression or excessive barking. These behaviors are a nuisance, but can be easily enough corrected through a good training regimen. Without proper training a little aggressive dog may try to run the whole house with its barking and growling.

To get good results always bee consistent and use only positive training-giving your little guy plenty of praise and rewards when he performs his training exercises. The positive reinforcement encourages your little pal to always try to do what you want. Repeat the exercises frequently-several time a day-to get the best results. Keeping the lessons short (about 10 minutes or so) is a good idea. Be sure to stick with the training, and before long  your small dog will be showing off to the big dogs. Having a well behaved small dog will make him the companion you had hoped for when you first adopted him.

The key to having a great pet is obedience training, no matter what size dog he may be . Don’t make the same mistakes everyone makes when trying to train your dog at home, and end up with a partially trained companion.
