Proper Dog Care

April 9, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

You and your dog can develop a really tight bond, the longer you and the dog are together, the stronger the bond will be.

Dogs serve many different needs for people. Some people get a dog because they are lonely and need a loyal friend or because they want a dog to protect the home. A dog that is taken good care of and given attention to regularly will give his life to help protect his home and his owner. For the blind a dog can be a pair of eyes to help them get around and for the police a dog can be an important tool and a loyal partner, with a nose that nothing can beat.

The most important thing about caring for your dog is proper nutrition. Most people think they know what good nutrition is, but they really don’t. This is because major dog food companies are so good at marketing to us. If you’d like to learn about the foods that are truly healthy for your dog, click here now to download the Dog Food Doctrine. It doesn’t cost a dime. You’ll also learn the 60 most dangerous dog food ingredients.

The second thing you need to know about taking care of a dog is that dogs need lots of exercise. This goes for both small dogs and big dogs. Most dogs should be taken outside about once every eight hours or so and or given a twenty minute walk to answer the call of nature.

It is also important to play with the dog on a regular basis. This could be playing a game of fetch, going to the park, wrestling or throwing the ball, just be sure not to get too rough with your dog. Horsing around with your dog for 30 minutes daily, is great for your dogs physical and mental health, it also creates a pretty great bond between the 2 of you which will then extend to everyone else in your family.

What you feed your dog is very important to the dogs continued good health. The better dog foods will be marked for what are groups the food is appropriate for. Dogs that are young need specific minerals and vitamins in greater doses then adult dogs, older dogs also need more vitamins such as calcium to strengthen their old bones. Feeding your dog the wrong food can stunt the dog’s growth and opens the dog to a larger risk of surgery when they are older.

Same as any of us, your dog needs to be taken to see the veterinarian about every six months or so and should get the suggested yearly shots. Routine vaccinations as well as visits will ensure your dog stays happy and grows old. However, there are a few “secrets” that your vet doesn’t want you to know about, click here now to see these vet secrets.

Dog Itching, Scratching, & Skin Allergies

March 12, 2010 by · 1 Comment

There are many conditions that can make a dog itch or have hair loss, including endocrine, autoimmune, infectious, and parasitic skin diseases. Therefore, it takes some detective work to identify the right cause.

If allergies are thought to be the cause, the first thing a veterinarian will usually ask is if the pet is on a flea-control product. Flea allergies are quite common and the easiest to control. Dog owners have many options available from high-street and online pet stores.

To check a dog for atopic allergies, veterinarians use an intradermal allergy test, or skin reaction test. The dog is mildly sedated, a small area on the side of the dog is shaved, and small amounts of common allergens are injected into the skin. Should the dog be allergic to a particular substance, the skin will become inflamed at the area of the injection.

Dogs that develop atopic allergies typically show symptoms when they are 5 years of age, but food allergies can be a problem at any time. They are high up on the list of suspected causes when a dog first exhibits itchy skin at an age less than 6 months, or over 5 years.

When testing for food allergies, the dog is put on what is referred to as an “elimination diet” for at least 10 weeks. This means the dog is fed food, which is high in protein and carbohydrate. which it has not eaten before, such as venison, duck, and potatoes.

Veterinarians offer these special foods, and some may be found in retail stores. Another option is to feed the dog a homemade diet of foods based on recommendations from the veterinarian.

Should the dog’s itching subside, the allergen is clearly being caused by one of the foods that make up its regular diet. For confirmation, the owner can reintroduce the old diet to see if the symptoms return.

Aggression In German Shepherd Dogs

December 16, 2009 by · 1 Comment

While German Shepherds may not inspire the ill-placed fear of such breeds as Rottweilers and Pit Bulls, they do land on many banned breed lists.

German Shepherds have, throughout the years, had a reputation of being aggressive. That reputation, while not entirely accurate, is based on some truth. While German Shepherd aggression is, in some small part, genetics, the main cause of ill manners is caused by the owner.

It is important to point out that not all (not even most) German Shepherds display inappropriate aggressive behavior. It is wholly unfair to let the misdemeanours of the minority result in the entire breed being labeled as “dangerous” or “aggressive”.That being said, it is vital for owners to learn to recognize the signs of German Shepherd aggression, so that they can immediately begin to work to bring them under control.

So, what forms can aggression take? Some German Shepherds will be aggressive only towards other animals. Some will display aggression only if they are approached whilst they are chewing a bone or eating. Others are aggressive toward strangers, and others even show aggression to some human members of the household in which they live.

Don’t discount even minor forms of aggression, say to a cat or the postman, because these could easily escalate into something more serious. At the first sign of aggression being displayed, or even before this, you need to embark on a course of proper training. Not only could is save injury to other people and animals, it could also save your own dog’s life.

Simply yelling at or hitting your dog when it acts aggressively is a faulty approach to take. For the most part, this makes the overall situation worse, as the dog becomes less trusting of humans. Also, a person is not going to win a “fight” with a German Shepherd. If he attacks you, you are going to be seriously hurt, and he is probably going to be put to sleep.

For German Shepherd aggression, the one course of action that should be taken is obedience training. It is best to begin at a young age before any bad habits are formed, however, no matter the age of your dog, obedience training remains the best option.

Stopping Your Dog From Chasing

December 6, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Most dogs enjoy chasing things, with cats, cars and people being particular favorites of theirs. Dogs generally see this as something fun to do, and don’t mean any harm by it, but, the fact is, that by chasing they invoke fear in others and can cause unintentional accidents.

Allowing your dog to chase anything is an irresponsible thing to do. Behavioral problems like chasing are more than just annoying. Solving this problem is possible though, but it will take some effort to correct.

It is not as simple as just yelling at or hitting your dog after it has chased something. You might think that doing this would make it less likely to do it next time, but it rarely does. It’s instincts will kick in again next time around and the pain it suffered last time will be soon forgotten. Taking a proactive approach, rather than a reactive one, is much better.

The very least that you should is not let your dog be in a situation that allows it to chase in the first place. Keep him on a leash or in a fenced yard if necessary. Keep your dog and those in the surrounding area safe until you learnt to predict his behavior and you have him trained to obey your commands.

Recognizing what your dog does immediately before it starts chasing something is the most important step. It is common for dogs to give some indication, such as a prolonged stare or a lifted leg, before they set off after something. Once you know what it is that your dog does, you can act before it does. You should be able to find this out fairly quickly as dogs are creatures of habit.

The obeying of basic commands is necessary for a dog to stop chasing. At the very least, your dog needs to respond to two – sit down and come here. Once your dog understands these skills it will be easier to stop him from chasing.

So, how do you train a dog to obey voice commands? First obtain the toy or treat that it likes the best. Place your chosen item 10ft from the dog and wait for it to start approaching it. As it starts to move, command it to either sit down or come to you. When it obeys your command, speak in a warm tone to it and let it have the toy or treat.

After having done this with just you and your dog, ask a friend for their assistance. Your dog should be standing or sitting by you, then your friend should past waving a toy or treat in their hand. If it starts to chase then give the dog the command to either sit down or come. Once it obeys your command, give it the reward.

This might take some time and patience, but your persistence will pay off. Just stay positive, patient and stick with it and you’ll get there.

Grooming and caring for your dog isn’t pampering, it’s essential. It is an essential step in keeping your dog happy and healthy and should never be overlooked.

Taking the proper steps to board your dog when you have to travel is another important consideration for dog owners.  Giving proper thought to these vital aspects of dog ownership can make all the difference in your pet’s life.

While we all tend to pay attention to the basics such as feeding, walking and playing with our pets, we sometimes overlook the other responsibilities that come with owning a dog.  Dog boarding and dog day care is as important as finding a place to stay for yourself.  You want someplace clean, safe and well appointed…why would you settle for anything less for your dog?

And keeping your dog’s coat clean and free of matting can be just as crucial to maintaining its health as a proper diet and plenty of water.Grooming a dog isn’t all about surface and beauty – it actually stimulates blood flow.Having a dog’s nails clipped isn’t pampering, it’s an essential grooming step that will keep your dog walking and moving comfortably.

While most owners can handle standard brushing and bathing, some prefer to use the services of a professional groomer when it comes to more extensive care. You may be able to find a suitable dog boarding facility that will also groom your dog during its stay.Choosing a groomer is an important decision and should be made after research.  Make sure they are licensed and their facility is clean and well maintained.

Dog grooming can be a good way for pet and owner to bond.  Dogs will often equate daily brushing with petting and showing affection.Dogs that are started early with regular grooming, become comfortable with the process and can really enjoy the entire experience.  But grooming doesn’t stop with the coat…the eyes, ears and nails also require regular maintenance to ensure proper health.

Careful dog owners will not only pay attention to grooming but also ensure that their dog is well cared for when they are away.  Dog boarding can be hard on both pet and owner, but if you do your research and find an establishment with good facilities and proper licensing it can also be a positive experience. Before choosing, you should always make a physical visit to any facility your considering leaving your dog at.

Some facilities offer full service boarding, including special diets if your dog requires one, walking and playing on a regular basis to ensure your dog gets proper exercise, and even dog grooming to keep pets looking and feeling their best.  One of the best ways of finding a good boarding facility is by asking other dog owners you know.  Often, word of mouth recommendation says more about a boarding facility than any license or brochure can.

Our pets are members of the family and we want to provide the same good care for them as we would any other family member? You’ll want to take the time to get referrals so you can feel comfortable leaving your buddy with them.

Caring for your dog: Reviewing your options

July 5, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

In the course of a couple of decades, there is a keen interest among pet owners to pamper their animal friends. Due to this trend, there is a great improvement in the area of pet care and your pet can now enjoy the very best of services. Looking at some of these new trends in pet care is quite interesting, though you may not find something suitable for your pet.

One service for dogs is a day care center. A typical pet owner is part of today’s busy lifestyle. Pet owners may not be able to take out time from their tight schedules to be with their animal companions. Many pet owners are unwilling to leave pets unattended at home each day. Get more help on the topic of custom dog portrait.

A center caring for dogs operates on the same principle as that of a center for child care. You can pay for your pet’s grooming and care on the basis of the service you expect or even the number of days that you want to keep your pet at the care center. There is a great demand for doggie care services, so there is an increase in the number of doggie day care centers in many cities.

Many hotels nowadays accept customers along with their dogs. More and more pets are traveling with their owners. Many pet owners are now taking their animal companions on business trips and vacations. Some hotels actually make unique arrangements to accommodate people on business tours with their pets. Get more help on the topic of pet portrait artist.

Hotels designed especially for pets are being opened at many locations. These hotels primarily cater to dogs, but the acceptable “clientele” at some of these venues is beginning to expand. Pet hotels or improvised kennels are used by pet owners to house their pets in the best possible place in case they want to go away on a trip.

Pet spas are in existence now. The ultimate enjoyment for your pet would be for it to spend a day at a spa. Pet spas provide the best food and grooming to your animal friends, something that they have never experienced before. Of course, a dog spending time at a spa does come with what oftentimes will be a hefty a price tag. You need to make sure that your dog will enjoy the spa treatments you are planning for him before you actually pay out the cash.

Take your dog to the dog park where he will enjoy more with others of his kind rather than going to a pet spa. In big towns, you will find new dog parks being opened regularly. In future, there will be dog parks within every community, world wide, say the experts.

The Dog is Everyone’s Best Friend

June 14, 2009 by · 1 Comment

Some people are pet people, others aren’t. And there are people who have never experienced having a pet so don’t know they are pet people yet.

Dogs aren’t known as ‘Mans best friend’ for no reason. They can quite simply be the most loyal friend you could ever have. Of course they won’t be able to give you any words of wisdom or go training at the gym with you but there are many other quality things you can do together. From a personal point of view my own dogs have given me so much in my life, these are just a few examples:

Companionship

Before I had a dog I would need to find a reason to go for a walk or for someone to come with me. Without fail, my dog comes along with me every time. I have always enjoyed my walks out with my dog.

Motivation

There are days in everyone’s life when you don’t feel like getting up in the morning. If you have a dog you need to. Every morning, my dog will make his way upstairs at around the same time and nuzzle his head under the covers to greet me. Sound like a terrible nightmare? I just can’t be angry with him. When they are visibly so happy to see you and are always in a good mood, how can you?

Safety Outdoors

Going back to my walks, there are areas I enjoy visiting that I would never have gone to on my own but having my beautiful loyal dog at my side provides that element of security. Even though he is an exceptionally friendly pet, he will turn into a protector if he senses danger. Although I think that I would also become a protector of him too! That is what friends are for right?

Safety at Home

In this day and age when nobody feels completely safe in their homes, your dog can be excellent deterrant. Most dogs will bark or alert you in some way if they see someone too close to the house or hear a noise they aren’t expecting. Mine does, and I didn’t train him to do that. As long as the ‘would be robber’ doesn’t catch on that my dog would simply jump at him and except some kind of praise, we’ll be ok!

Entertainment

I have to say I am never bored in my house. You know those days when you are a little restless. Nothing to read, nothing on television, don’t want to do housework. Well, your four legged canine friend will only too happily provide entertainement for as long as necessary. Play catch, teach him some tricks or take him for a long walk in the countryside. Boredom eliminated!

And I got all this for the price of an adoption fee from the local dogs home and a bag of dog food every month. I wouldn’t trade my four legged best buddy for anything.

Just remember that while they aren’t human, having a dog is almost like having a child. You need to take good care of him/her. He requires medical checks, a good healthy diet and plenty of guidance to grow into a good, well behaved adult dog. So find a good local vet, a well stocked pet supplies shop and read some dog books too because there are plenty out there.

Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie): The Diminutive Herder of Shetland Island, Scotland

May 18, 2009 by · 3 Comments

The Shetland Sheepdog or simply known as the Sheltie is one of the dog breeds around the world whose origin is not exactly defined. What’s certain, however, is the fact that the Sheltie is a supposed original resident of the rocky region of the Shetland Island in Scotland. Physically, this breed appears like a miniature Collie but in fact, the breeding was never intended to achieve this kind of result.

The Sheltie was said to be the result of various breeding between the Scottish Rough Collie, Pomeranian, Greenland Yakki (now extinct), and the King Charles Spaniel or is a direct descendant of one of these breeds. In Shetland Island, the Sheltie was believed to do herding tasks just like the other Collies. Contradictions supply, however, that the Sheltie was not used for herding but rather for chasing small creatures such as ducks and squirrels.

Presently, this dog is popular around the world as an outstanding family companion and children’s pet. This breed is very loyal, docile and highly trainable and it intensely wills to please the master. With a firm and confident training and treatment from the owner, the Sheltie will definitely become a superiorly fantastic household companion and reliable family pet.

If not often exposed to people in the beginning, this breed has the tendency to become aloof towards strangers when it grows up. It does well around people especially children and therefore should be socialized at a young age. The Sheltie is a superb watch dog as well, barking as a signal when there is an approaching human or car towards the house.

Although never really believed to be a herder then, the Sheltie of today has an eager herder instinct that most of the time comes out through its irrepressible desire to chase and herd other creatures. Because of this, it needs to be always kept busy and so activities such as running and chasing around within a wide spaced area is necessary. The Sheltie is not hyper active; just make sure to give it the right amount of activities in order to keep its physical and mental health in shape.

The normal height of the Sheltie is 13 to 16 inches while its normal weight is between 14 to 27 pounds. It has an outer coat and an inner coat wherein the outer coat is long, coarse and dense and acts as a water-guard. The inner coat is somewhat softer and serves as a comforter against hot or cold temperatures.

The general colors of the Sheltie are sable, tri-colour and blue merle. The sable is either golden or mahogany and the tri-colour is white, black and tan. The blue merle is composed of grey, white, black and tan.

In 1909, the first Sheltie was first registered in the English Kennel Club and in 1911; the first Sheltie was registered in the American Kennel Club. This breed, even if not intended to be a herder, has a natural affinity in herding smaller creatures which is often seen through its chasing smaller animals. What’s certain, however, that herder or not, the Sheltie is still recognized as an outstanding pet of families around the world.

Rhodesian Ridgeback: A Fierce Lion Hunter Yet A Gentle House Companion

May 18, 2009 by · 1 Comment

Everyone knows that when a lion gets mad, it wrecks unimaginable and irreversible havoc that’s why only those skilled enough and experienced hunters can face and elude this creature’s wrath. Humans and animals are known to shiver in fear over the sight of a lion gone mad but not this one breed of dog. Instead of running for its dear life, it unabashedly challenges and faces the king of the jungle’s fury and succeeds at it most of the time: this is the Rhodesian Ridgeback dog.

This breed, in all its handsomeness and masculinity, is a native of South Africa where lions are a common sight. Originally, some native tribes of this country owned a ridgebacked breed of dog used as hunting aids and household companions. The Boer farmers, another tribe, realized the potential of this breed and so they bred it with the Khoikhoi dog, Mastiff and Deerhound to produce the modern day Rhodesian Ridgeback.

In 1877, a Reverend Helm brought two of these new breed to Bulawayo, Rhodesia- today’s Zimbabwe, and it was there that more people discovered this dog’s ferocity towards lions and excellent hunting skills. In 1922, the first standard of the Rhodesian Ridgeback was created and the breed was remarked as a game hunting breed. There had been a debated conundrum regarding this dog’s classification in terms of hunting as it is both excellent in hunting big games as the ferocious and large as a lion and hunting small games as tiny as a squirrel.

The breed’s name, Ridgeback, is a manifestation of its appearance because it certainly possesses a symmetrical ridge running along its back. The ridge is made prominent by its growth which is in the opposite direction of the dogs overall coat. This breed’s coat appears sleek and glossy colored in either light wheat or red wheat.

In hunting, the Ridgeback is ferocious and accurate but inside the home, it transforms in to a gentle, calm and biddable pet. It is playful and patient with children, kind and strongly protective of its owners. It is also an outstanding watchdog as it is intent, sharp and alert in observing unfriendly people or forces.

Additionally, this renowned hunter is naturally intelligent, cunning, and independent and these sometimes may lead to difficult training sessions. However, if you have a firm and patient disposition towards this dog, you will gain its trust and thus will never have to handle difficult trainings. This breed has a tendency, too, to be aloof towards strangers and will always be on its guard if it chances upon one.

It is also a suitable dog for apartment living so long as it is provided with an everyday lengthy and fast-paced walking or jogging. Inside the house they are relatively dormant but once outside they tend to be energetic and eager huge pets. Their exercise needs to be done in an open space such as large backyards or parks.

Knowing the harsh conditions of Africa, we can easily understand why this dog can stand unforgiving situations at times. In fact, this dog can withstand flaring hot days and damp and cold nights. It can also go on for 24 hours and more without food and water.
