A Look At The World of Dog Beds
Dogs sleep about 14 hours a day, so buying a comfy dog bed is important . Gone are the days when you were just basically buying a lump of pillow. Does your dog love to curl up, or is he or she more of a sprawler? High wall, bolster or deep beds will make them feel warm and cozy while the good old-fashioned mats, pads or mattresses give them a generous amount of room. One should take into consideration age, size, durability of the dog bed, and a pets sleeping habits when making a choice. Also there are numerous different types of beds, and one fashion of dog bed may be more suited to your pet than other styles. Your pets rest is important in order for him or her to lead a joyful and active life.
With a puppy, naturally one looks for something the puppy will grow into. Being able to wash the dog bed is also key since puppies are accident-prone. Generally, a small puppy doesn’t require a great deal of cushioning, since his or her weight won’t weight down the pet bed. The bed should also be simple to get in and out of, so if there is a step into the dog bed, as in the round type, it should be at a low level.
There are many diverse kinds of dog beds available which vary according to size, design, comfort, and cost. Just as there are a number of different breeds of dogs.An older dog needs a bed that is easier to get in and out of, and that they can feel more comfortable in. Bigger dogs need bigger beds, dogs that weigh more require beds that can support their weight. Dogs with very short legs need flat beds so that they can get in their beds without any problems. A standard dog bed looks like a fluffy pillow or cushion but do not have rims or edges. They are available in many shapes, sizes, materials and colors.Typically shapes include oval, round, square and rectangular.A variety of these beds are covered with materials such as microfiber, faux suede, denim, flannel or fleece. They frequently contain polyester filling and/or foam padding. Some beds are also filled with cedar chips to deter odors and insects. Be sure and do not overlook the stuffing used in dog beds before you decide to make your purchase. Some dogs are allergic to some synthetic materials and can get rashes from being in contact with plastics. If your dog has a history of skin ailments or you are buying a bed for a puppy, you may want to avoid beds with cedar chips or cedar scent. Several varieties of dog beds have removable, washable covers.
Orthopedic dog beds are specially designed for dogs with arthritis or other joint problems such as hip dysplasia, and for senior citizen dogs regardless of their health problems. Expect to pay a little more for an orthopedic dog bed as they are commonly made of higher quality materials than standard dog beds, such as high-density, medical-grade foam that provides more support and comfort. Some beds even include electric heating pads to provide soothing warmth which helps to ease joint pain. Waterproof or washable fabrics may perhaps be needed for older dogs that are incontinent.
These days, dog lovers can find dog beds at nearly any pet store, online or offline. However, if you want to find a high-class designer dog bed, you may need to head to an exclusive online dog store or a brick-and-mortar pet boutique.
Where does your dog sleep? Your own couch or the bed are options, Sure, but they are not always ideal. Dogs love human companionship and would sleep in a human bed all the time if they could, but this is not always feasible or practical. Your dog needs a spot to retreat, a place to rest his head, somewhere soft and comfortable to call his own. It is one of your dogs basic needs – A Great Bed!
If your dog is your best friend, you don’t want him to sleep on the cold, hard floor . I hope this article will encourage you to purchase a nice, comfy bed for your companion.
So, You Want A Bulldog Puppy?

When considering a bulldog for a pet, you must bear in mind that the responsibilities of caring for a bulldog will consume a great deal of your time. Bulldogs are active and need a lot of exercise, grooming, and cleaning on a regular basis. In order to make sure your bulldog has a happy and healthy life, you must commit yourself to a constant care routine.
Bulldogs come in many different types, and you should make sure that you understand the personality of the dog before you commit to ownership. English bulldog puppies may be more suitable to your lifestyle than, say, American bulldog puppies.
Many people are under the false impression that bulldogs do not need a lot of daily exercise, this is not true. Bulldogs need exercise just like any other dog needs exercise, obviously not as much exercise as you would give an Alsatian for example, but enough exercise to keep your bulldog healthy. Find the rhythm that is good for your dog and never walk him just after a meal and you will find that your bulldog will be healthy and happy.
Bulldog grooming is also very necessary to help your pet maintain a healthy lifestyle. By grooming your dog once or twice a week your bulldogs coat will stay healthy. It is normally very hard to groom a bulldog if the dog has not been trained as a puppy. When your bulldog is still a puppy teach him how to act when grooming so that it will be a lot easier in the future.
With bulldogs, it is imperative that you understand the feeding requirements. While your bulldog is young and getting plenty of exercise, he will need to be fed about for times a day to ensure that he can grow strong and healthy. Bulldogs are very muscular and it takes a lot of protein and certain fats to maintain that muscle. As the dog becomes fully grown, you should reduce the feeding schedule to twice a day to prevent obesity.
Training a bulldog puppy can be difficult if you aren’t consistent. The key is to keep correcting him until he understands what he is supposed to do. Make frequent trips outside and try not to use much physical correction with the pup, as they can be provoked easily. When lead training, it is recommended to use a lightweight chain collar. Many have found the choke chain collars are very effective with such strong-built pups.
Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer
A trek to the swimming pool, the local creek, or the ocean helps us stay cool during the “dog days” of summer. But what about our canine friends – how can we keep them cool?
The owner was frantic. Just an hour before, her Lhasa Apso, Gizmo was playing in the backyard. Now he was listless and having trouble breathing.
Rushing him to the nearest veterinary clinic, a concerned veterinary technician informed her Gizmo’s temperature was well over 106 degrees – he was suffering from heat stroke. Luckily for Gizmo – and with the help of a quick thinking owner and veterinary technician – he recovered.
Every summer, hundreds of dogs find their way to the family veterinarian after spending just a few hours in the hot sun.

Dogs do not sweat like we do. Cooling themselves by panting, dogs use the moisture evaporating off their tongue as a means to lower their body’s temperature. Anything overwhelming this natural cooling system leads to heat stroke. With more families away from home during the day, our dogs are often left outdoors where it may be difficult to find shady, cool places and water to drink.
Normally, a dog’s temperature ranges from 100 to 102.5 degrees. In cases of heat stroke, temperatures over 106 degrees are considered to be an emergency situation – temperatures over 110 degrees can be fatal in a matter of minutes.
This high level of hyperthermia (higher than normal body temperature) can affect every major body system, such as the kidneys and heart, so it is imperative you get your pet to a veterinarian as soon as you safely can.
Dogs with heat stroke often show the following symptoms:
•Panting excessively
• Collapses, or is weak when standing
• Thick, ropy saliva, hanging copiously from the mouth
• Bright red mucous membranes, although some dogs may show pale or even muddy gums.
Heat stroke can affect any dog, although dogs with short faces, such as Boston, Pugs, and Bulldogs may be at higher risk due their inability to effectively pant and cool themselves.
A lot of pet owners believe that their pet will be fine outdoors. However, inadequate shade and/or water can affect even the most seasoned outdoor dog.
Interestingly, heat stroke in cats is very rare. Most animal experts believe that cats are extremely good at finding the coolest spots to lay and also avoid the excessive, excitatory exertions that many dogs seem to thrive on, such as squirrel chasing.
If you find your dog vigorously panting on a warm summer day, quickly move the pet out of the environment and into a cooler place. Getting the pet into a shady area with a fan running on him can be very helpful. Using cool, not cold, tap water on the extremities and trunk can also help to effectively lower the body temperature, as well as rubbing alcohol placed on the skin of the stomach. Do not use ice or extremely cold water. Although it seems logical, extreme cold will cause surface blood vessels to contract, forming an insulating area that traps heat in the body, delaying the cooling of the vital organs.
Forcing your dog to drink water is not recommended. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heat stroke, quickly load your pet carefully into a car and take him to your veterinarian. Under no circumstances should you leave your pet alone in the vehicle.
Without these few life saving steps, many dogs might lose their lives to the “dog-days” of summer. But, as Gizmo will testify, quick thinking owners and veterinary professionals can help get them back on their feet in no time.

Is your pet in debt?
May 18, 2009 by Daniel · Leave a Comment
Having a pet in the house is diffrent now then it was just a few years ago.No longer is there Britney Spears of the world going into a LA pet boutique and dropping $3000 on a Yorkie. Do something like that now and suffer the ire of PETA. Even our new president is being affected by the recent developments in the economy. He has realized that you can’t simply enter a pet store and 30 minutes later walk out with a new family member. The president has said that trying to find a new dog for his children is tougher than finding a Commerce secretary. He has been trying to model what a responsible new potential pet owner should be like during a recession, or any other time for that matter. While the nation is going through this, we need to consider the needs of the entire family and hold off until the household is settled before taking on the responsibility of a pet. He is also showing setting a good example by getting a pet from a shelter or breed rescue.
Although the president’s decision of a new family pet, and whether it will be a labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound has been all over the media, the biggest topic is the uncertain future of pets in a period when some are having a hard time paying for grocery bills. In our nation’s hayday, it was common to see stories that made us laugh and shake our heads about how people would spend tremendious amounts of money on their dogs. They believed that their dogs actually appreciated the posh bottled water that was served to them in a crystal doggie glass. Stories of million dollar doggie trust funds, thousand dollar doggie hotels, pearl necklaces, and other instances of doggie decadence covered the newspapers daily.
Now that the economy has taken a nose dive, articles about pets have evolved and have become much more daunting and deeply depressing. The media all across our country have been reporting about local animal shelters becoming filled far over their capacity, often times being forced to euthanize a greater number of otherwise healthy pets simply because of space constraints. Still others have left their pets in foreclosed houses or chained up in back yards of abandoned properties, left to fend for themselves, often times not able to reach food and water painfully starving to death at the end of a chain. The LA times even made pets and the economy their features story of the New Year. Pets are quickly turning into the luxury that can no longer be afforded.
The current downslide follows a previous upswing seen in adoption rates of the recient past. For nearly a decade shelters and rescues have been seeing a consistant rise in the rate of adoptions a starke difference from the overwhelming intake and decline in new adoption applications. There is no real way of knowing if we have seen the bottom of this staggering trend or if there is more despair to come. One thing is for certain, it is not getting any better.
Any progress made in the past of teaching the public on the need to adopt from shelters instead of purchasing from a puppy store means nothing if our falling economy causes people to not be able to afford to own a pet or take care of the pets that they already have in their home. Vet costs alone have been a major factor in family’s decisions to give up their beloved dogs. With the average vet visit costing in the range of $200 a visit, people often have to decide whether they can spend this month’s credit card payment and unless they find a way to reduce their credit card debt, they often have little choice but to give up their pet.
Another sign of the rapid decline of the luxury pet market was the cancelation New York’s Pet Fashion Week. With all this negative news on the pet industry it shoould be mentioned that pets have a lot of good affects. Vets across the nation have said that pets are an excellent way to lower blood pressure which helps justify spending the money spent on them.
The only way for many people to avoid having to make tough decisions such as of paying bills of buying food for Fido, is to get themselves in a position to weather the economic storm. For many people this could mean entering into a debt settlement program or other ways of lowering their household expenses. Choosing bankruptcy normally is not the best option for these embattled pet owners who do not want to deal with the court system, paying attorney fees nor having the black mark on their credit for up to ten years. Often times credit card counseling, which is run by the creditors, is not a realistic option since in most cases the payments are no less and sometimes more then what they are paying at the moment. Again this makes the owner struggle with pet food not to mention vet bills as mentioned earlier.
Whatever program you may decide, should you need credit card debt relief, ensure that you educate yourself on the differences between the programs and fully understand the pitfalls. In most cases talking to someone who can assist you in reducing your debt can be helpful and is suggested over doing it by yourself.
This debate over pets and how they affect our economy will probably go on as long as people are struggling in this economic crunch our nation is experiencing. The main issue is that we either need to deal with the debt we have and pull ourselves out of this crisis, or resort to what many have and get rid of the family dog. Where will this trend end? Will the next crisis cause us to decide whether to buy food for our kids and pay for medical insurance or leave them on the side of the street to fend for themselves.
Friendly Training Methods to Communicate with your Dog
May 17, 2009 by Amy Nutt · Leave a Comment
Many people become frustrated with a dog that just won’t listen. They want to be to understand their dog and develop communication method that the dog will understand. Fortunately, there are number ‘friendly’ training methods that you can use to help you communicate with your dog, which will help eliminate behavior problems.
Most behavior problems like biting, jumping on strangers, urinating on the floor, and barking, result from a failure to communicate properly with your dog. Basically, the dog does not understand what you are trying teach him. ‘Dog-Friendly’ methods of training means you can communicate and dog training without inflicting pain or anger. They are positive reinforcement techniques that are fun for both you and your dog.
Using friendly training methods that include positive training techniques will help you develop a trusting life-long bond with your dog. To build a strong owner-dog relationship, based on trust and mutual respect, incorporating the following techniques will help:
Kindness and Patience is Essential: Yelling, hitting, using choke collars, or electric shock, is not only cruel, but will not train your dog. He will develop a fear of you and most likely develop other behavioral problems such as aggression, trust, love, and respect, are essential to understanding and communication with your dog. Of course, your dog should know its position in the family, and that you are the ‘top dog’ so to speak, but you do not have to do this using punishing and inhumane methods. It won’t work. Friendly training helps you work with your dog’s natural instincts
Training and Play: One thing that dogs love is play. Make your training fun. Motivate the dog with treats and praise when he accomplishes a task. For instance, if your dog is jumping on you, praise your dog every time he greets you by sitting. When you meet him, assist him with sitting and then praise him or give him a treat. Repeating the sitting technique, the dog will learn he is rewarded for sitting and not jumping on you. Make sure you are consistent with the training technique and reward. You do not want to confuse the dog.
Association and Repetition: Dogs do not have the ability to learn something once. You have to associate the word with the action you want it to perform. For instance, if you want it to lie down, you can use the correct signal and you can lay down with your dog. After it lies down, you can reward him with a treat or praise. Keep repeating the method and your dog will learn to associate the word and action. Connecting words with actions in a positive way .is essential to success
Arrange for Your Dog to Succeed: Throughout your training session, make sure you incorporate easy techniques so you can reward him. The reward for succeeding will stay with him. He will be a much happier dog. Ending the session with a successful training technique will leave him feeling happy. Keep Positive: Some dogs will take longer to learn than others. If you get angry or show frustration, your dog will pick up on your negative energy. The dog will be confused and react to your negative emotions by displaying negative behavior.
Clicker Reinforcement: Use a clicker device to make a ‘click’ sound when your dog does something right. They will begin to learn that the sound means they did something right.
Dogs are never entirely trained. As the owner, you must keep up with the positive reinforcement techniques. If you don’t, the dog may forget some learned behaviors. Communication is critical to creating a life long bond with your dog. It is important to observe how your dogs react to situations so you learn its body language. Talk to your dog in a kind and loving voice and you will soon find yourself with a loyal life friend.
4 Methods to Choose a Dog Collar
It is a very simple process to pick a collar for your dog. There are lots of ways to decide, but we will only be discussing four of them in this article.
One way to choose would be to know the measurements of your dogs neck. If you don’t know you can simply use a tape measure to find out. Once you have this information you can look at the package that the collar comes in to see if it mentions the size of the collar. As a rule of thumb you always want to be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck.
The second way I would suggest is simply to know the weight of your pet. Many times the collars have something that will tell you the weight range of the dogs that the collars are intended for. This will also help you to figure out how sturdy of a collar you will need that wont break if your dog tries to pull away from you while walking them.
I would also suggest that you pay attention to the material of the collar. Sometimes the leather collars break when pressure is applied to often. You should consider this if you have a dog that is not trained who jerks you around often. Leather also cracks when you get it wet to often.
The last thing I would recommend is to figure out what you want the collar for. Decide if you are buying the collar for training reasons or just for simply walking the dog. Training collars take a bit more detail to choose than what I listed here in this article. It’s always less complicated if its only for walking your dogs.
Choosing your dog’s collar is not a hard task to handle. As soon as you find out how much you want to spend on your collar and a good color and fit you should buy it. Just understand that training collars take more effort and research.
Case Study: Advice on People with Whining Dogs
May 10, 2009 by Daniel · Leave a Comment
Major and Princess are two Golden Retrievers that have matured in a nice suburban home together. The owner, Ms. Vicky, has no objection about the behaviors of the two dogs, with the exception of the fact that they whine relentlessly . Seeing as her prince and princess do not have any aggressive tendencies, are not territorial, and do not have any other bad habits, she has overlooked this dog whining issue for years. However, as years passed by, the whining became annoying and Ms. Vicky began to speculate exactly why they are always whining.
In an effort to stop this behavior, she used her time to find the root of the problem. Dogs whine for a lot of reasons, including pain, fear, or boredom. In this phase , she thought that the cause of the whining was probably boredom, but she also felt that the other reasons should not be completely ruled out and so she decided to seek for the expert’s opinion. Toby and Josie’s owner brought the pair to the vet’s office to get more information regarding the the situation. The veterinarian believed that the whining behavior stemmed from Toby and Josie being left alone for a large portion of the day while Ms. Vicky was at work. Although Toby and Josie were placed outdoors, so they can play, do their business, and exercise at will, the pair was still lonely. Given that this behavior has never been checked, the dogs have acquired the habit as a sympathy ploy to get what they want. Ms. Vicky confirmed this idea and the next step of breaking the habit started.
First of all , Toby and Josie were noticeably not okay with their current condition of being left alone during the morning. To make her dearly loved prince and princess happier, Vicky hired a pet sitter who comes in twice a day to walk, pet, and play with Toby and Josie. Despite the fact that the whining was still present, they’ve observed that the two dogs seem to be much happier when their owner returns from work. If Ms. Vicky didn’t allowed this whining problem to continue for such a long period of time and corrected the problem sooner, this new arrangement would have likely ended the whining altogether.
In the mean time, the owner began to put into practice the new training method for the two dogs. Every time any of the dog whines, she firmly states “no whine”. She gives this command with a quick squirt of water from a spray bottle to get the dog’s attention. Once the dog stops whining, the Miss lavishes it with praises and treats. Once the dog stops whining, the Miss lavishes it with praises and treats. Of course, tasks like going outside cannot be punished, since many dogs whine when they require to relieve themselves.
This training technique accompanied with hiring of a pet sitter has dramatically changed the whining situation with Toby and Josie. Now, neither dog whines to get what they want! Furthermore, Miss Vicky finds the situation a great deal less stressful on both her and the dogs. If you too are experiencing a similar situation, consider following this case study to help break your dogs from whining. Always remember that pain or discomfort is a possible reason for whining, so regularly visit your vet to ensure your dog is always in good condition. Best of Luck! Cheers!
House Training For The New Puppy Owner
April 22, 2009 by Matt McGrath · Leave a Comment
Puppies are so cute; everybody loves them. They are cuddly, fun, playful and curious and we tend to love every part of having a new puppy until they go potty in an inappropriate spot and then we have to contend with the biggest problem and difficulty of owning a new puppy, puppy house training.
The most crucial thing to remember and to take into consideration is that your puppy is still just a baby. He does not yet have the ability to control his elimination habits or to realize what you are asking him to do when you tell him to go potty. You will need to have patience and work with him closely for a few weeks before he has the capability to ask you when it is time to go out and to control his bladder and other functions.
A young puppy that is less than 15 weeks of age might need to go outside as often as 2-3 times per hour. A puppy that is playing hard will also have to go out more often because playing makes urine. Remind yourself that your puppy is still not able to control himself so any accidents at this point are not his fault but rather yours for not taking him out to potty more often.
The most important aspect to puppy house training is to be consistent. Use consistent commands, take him to the same potty place and give him the same praise and treats. Your puppy will learn fast if you consistently do things the same way but mix anything up and he will get confused. Puppies respond well to consistency.
As you are housetraining your puppy you will need to make sure that the situation is as positive as possible for your puppy. If he ever develops any fear of your reactions or if he ever feels fear that he is doing something wrong your house training efforts will take longer. Your puppy wants to please you and if he does not know how to do that it will take longer for him to learn about potty training.
It is doubtful that you will be able to be with your puppy all the time so when you need to be away from your puppy you should put him in a crate. Puppies and dogs are natural den animals and they like to have a small home of their own. Also, puppies will rarely soil their own space so a crate will assist you in teaching your puppy how to control himself.
The most crucial aspects of puppy house training are to be consistent and positive. Make sure that you take your puppy outside often, especially at first. Always use just one spot for his elimination spot and use consistent commands. Give him lots of praise for completing his chore and make sure that the experience is not a scary one for him.
It should take just a few short weeks to complete your puppy house training. Doing it right will serve you for the whole time that you own your dog so be consistent and positive and you will be able to enjoy many happy years with your new puppy.
Potty Training Your Puppy Quick And Easy
April 21, 2009 by Matt McGrath · Leave a Comment
Getting a new puppy is always a fun time for a family. Puppies are so fun and adorable that everyone loves them. They quickly become part of the family and everyone enjoys the playing, the curiosity and the sweet cuddliness but nobody likes it when they do their duty in the house. Puppy potty training is probably the most challenging and likely the only real problem that goes with having a new puppy but if you are going to be a happy dog owner you will need to know that your puppy house training is effectively completed.
You will need to spend quality time with and have patience with your new puppy when it comes to housetraining. A puppy is still just a baby and a puppy does not have the capacity yet to know what you want him to do. It will be an easier job to complete your puppy house training if you are patient and loving with your puppy. Even though it is disappointing when your puppy goes potty in the house if you are impatient and express anger your puppy housetraining will take more time.
A young puppy that is less than 15 weeks of age might need to go outside as frequently as 2-3 times per hour. A puppy that is playing hard will also have to go out more often because playing creates urine. Remind yourself that your puppy is still not at the age where he can control himself so any mishaps at this point are not his fault but rather your fault for not getting him out to potty more often.
The most crucial part to puppy house training is to be consistent. Use the same commands, take him to the same potty place and give him consistent praise and treats. Your puppy will learn fast if you consistently do things the same way but change anything up and he may get confused. Puppies respond well to consistency.
After your puppy finishes his elimination chore reward him with lavish praise and treats. Try to make the puppy house training experience as positive as possible for your puppy. If you are impatient or mean to your puppy as he is learning puppy house training your efforts will take longer as he will become fearful of not knowing what is demanded of him.
When you need to be away from your puppy you should put your puppy in a crate. A crate will actually help you with your puppy house training because dogs by nature will keep their own space clean. Generally a puppy will not soil in his crate so a crate will help him learn to control himself. Puppies and dogs are also den animals and they enjoy the safety of a smaller den of their own.
A positive atmosphere and consistency will be the most crucial aspects of your puppy house training. Make sure that you are consistently taking your puppy outside, that you consistently take him to the same spot and that you consistently give him praise and treats for doing his duty. If you make the whole puppy house training experience a positive one for your puppy you will have success more quickly and it will be more effective.
It should take just a few short weeks to complete your puppy house training. Doing it right will serve you for the entire time that you own your dog so be consistent and positive and you will be able to enjoy many happy years with your new puppy.
