Some Good reasons for Dog Barking

My neighbor’s dogs barked all night-close enough and loud enough to keep me awake. There was a full moon out, and so were the area’s coyotes-yipping and howling and disturbing all the dogs that live around her. My own dogs barked when the coyotes first started in, but stayed quiet the rest of the night after I quieted them with a command. Unfortunately for me, my neighbors must be the world’s deepest sleepers, because I have never heard them quiet their dogs at night.

As I thought about the all night barking, it was obvious that even though dogs may start their barking for a good reason sometimes, when it is out of control it is a problem just like any other form of barking.I felt like the owners were at least as much at fault as their dogs-if not more-for not correcting the problem.

Even though our dogs may have a good reason to start barking, as their owner it is my job to keep it under control. There are some very good reasons my dogs will bark, and I would not want to change that.

Check out these more acceptable reasons for your dog to start his barking. You can see that these reasons for barking are just part of a dog’s communication and are not dog barking problems derived from any behavior problems.

• One very good reason for your dog to bark is to warn you that something (perhaps a stranger or another dog) is coming your way. This type of warning is something you want to have from your dog, and so you will not want to discourage it. Given that, you should still be able to quiet him with a command to stop. For instance, if your dog starts barking because he sees  someone getting out of a car in front of your house,  and you can see the person is not of any danger, you should be able to stop your dog’s barking  with a simple command. On the other hand, if it is someone you want to discourage from coming onto your property (for example,maybe some over-zealous religious types), well then, you can let the barking continue a little longer. Protection barking is “good barking”-just make sure you can always control and stop the barking quickly with a command. If your dog is barking a lot for other reasons then you do have problem barking needing correction.

• A dog will bark when he is very happy and excited about something that is going on. I personally enjoy playing a lot with my dogs, and their barking at me and at each other while we play is just part of the fun. That is just the dog’s way of saying he is having a great time, and wants more of the same. When we are playing I only will quiet them down in the case of one of them getting a little carried away with the excitement.  Some playful barking is jut fine, but when one of them gets too into the barking, that has to be stopped. Don’t let one of your dogs get into continuous barking while playing, or that could reinforce a bad habit of barking too much.
• Often dogs will start barking when their master comes home. This type of excitement barking is typical, and not a problem if it is limited to a few greeting barks. A couple of greeting barks is how your dog is saying “welcome home” and I like to be greeted by my dogs. If the dogs keep the barking up ,even after you’ve greeted them back, then it is not such a “good barking” anymore. That puts this behavior onto the unacceptable list because the dog doesn’t immediately stop barking after saying “Hi”.

• When my Lab wants some playtime, she will let me know via a bark or two, as she brings me a ball to throw.  However, some dogs will try to use their barking as a way of bullying you into playing with them. My dog had me pretty well trained through her bullying, so I know what this is like first hand. this is not a good thing, because as the Alpha dog, you must be the one to decide when playtime starts, not the dog. If you let the dog think it is the boss instead of you, you will make all other training more difficult. If your dog is bullying you, don’t let it, because it is important that you are always viewed as the boss in the relationship-not the other way around.

So, you can see, all the above forms of barking are socially acceptable (when controlled)-whether because the barking stops very quickly when there is no reason for it, or because the dog is protecting you. However, most of the other reasons dogs bark create a disturbance and should be corrected.

Tips to Control Dog Barking

Sometimes your dog  may start barking because he gets overexcited to see you, or really wants your attention, or is barking to protect you-these are all minor barking problems, and you should be able to stop them with a simple command to quiet down. If your dog suffers from any of these issues listed below, you should work with the dog on correcting these barking problems. It is too bad, but  the excessive barking will not just go away on its own accord.

Here are some examples of barking problem behaviors and some ways to correct these types of dog barking problems-use the tips that are appropriate to your own dog’s behavior problem.

• To correct the problem of dogs barking upon seeing a stranger or another dog  somewhere within their visual range, it is necessary to block your dog’s view out of his yard. If you can move your dog behind a solid fence you will have blocked that view. As an alternative to a fence (if you have none) try moving your dog to an area of the backyard with no view of the street -you will need to put  him on a lead to keep him there. If you dog is an indoor dog, you can try closing all the drapes so your dog cannot see outside anymore.

• Solving the problem of your dog barking because he hears nearby dogs having a conversation, takes a hands on approach-literally. To do this, you will need to use your hand to shut your dogs mouth, and to keep it shut until your dog has submitted and is calm. He won’t be liking this much, so you will have to hold onto his  collar while you do this because he may try to move away from you. Another good trick that will startle him out of barking is to spray him in the face with a small blast of water from a little spray bottle. A can of pebbles is also good for startling your dog into  stopping the barking for a bit. These tricks all work to temporarily stop the barking for the time you are using them. As you have your hand over his mouth or spray him, you must also command your dog to be “quiet” or say “no barking”. At the end of a successful training to stop barking, your dog should stop when just given your verbal command.

• In order to correct a dog that barks for  reasons of  being stressed and feeling insecure it  requires a lot of attention from you through training, exercising and playing with your dog. All the activity should make your dog a happier, more confident dog, who won’t need to express his anxiety through barking.

• To correct the dog barking problems cause by a bored or lonely dog, also will require increase attention by you in the way of exercising and playing and training your dog.  A dog that is often left alone all day, without plenty of playing and exercising, is definitely more likely to develop this behavior. By giving your dog at least one and a half hours daily exercise, you will help a lot with his feelings of loneliness and boredom, and hopefully cut way down on his need to bark for long periods of time.

• Correct the problem of your own dog barking for attention by saying a firm “no” and then turning your back to him and ignoring him for a few minutes. Don’t let your dog bully you into doing whatever he wants. The reason for this, besides the annoyance of a steadily barking dog, is that you are the Alpha dog. You will not be seen as Alpha by your dog if he can boss you around when he wants by barking at you. It is essential for training your dog that you alone are the Alpha dog

If none of these techniques works for you, the pet stores sell a few types of  barking prevention collars. The first of these prevention collars is a Citronella oil collar-this works by spraying a mist of citronella oil into your dogs face when it is activated by the dog’s barking. The second type of collar works by emitting a very high pitched sound . The collars work by using aversion theory-one through a smell dog’s hate, and the other through an irritating noise.

There is even a collar that prevents barking through the application of electric shock. Frequently dog trainers have found success using these when other methods have failed with a very headstrong or stubborn dog.

One of the biggest problems every dog owner has to go through is learning how to stop excessive dog barking. This is the sort of problem that could get your dog killed, annoy your neighbors, and cause you lots of frustration. What can a frustrated dog owner such as yourself do? Why Dogs Bark

A dog will bark for all sorts of different reasons. Your dog could be barking because it needs to go to the bathroom, out of boredom, or seen another dog. The real point is to find what the cause is. Many people love their dogs but cannot stand the incessant barking that they do whenever they see a stranger or another dog. There is nothing more annoying and nerve racking than your dog going crazy over the sight of the mailman when you are on the phone, watching television, or simply trying to type an email to someone.

I have found that buying an anti bark collar is the most effective way to solve the most annoying problem.

These collars go round your dogs neck and gives them a minor shock when they start to bark out of control. The collar is not designed to hurt any dog or cause it pain. Rather its designed to shock the dog when he starts to bark really loud.

There are sensors on the collar that fit right bellow the dog’s neck that can sense the degree and pitch of any dog’s bark. The shock is not really painful as it is uncomfortable and shocking which in turn lets your dog know what he is doing is unacceptable.

I have never seen a case when an anti bark collar did not work. They have been tried on many different types of dogs and every time they do their job. They only time when it did not work is when the owner did not put the gadget on his or her dog every morning so the device was never given a chance.

They may be depressed for the first day, this is quite common, but they will get over it quickly by the second or third day. Within a week you will notice that you do not have to use the bark collar every day. You can go every other day. Within two weeks your barking dog will be trained. He will know not to bark at the kid getting off the school bus, or your neighbor walking her dog, or your the landscaper down the road mowing the grass.

When used for several weeks they can be very effective and your “best friend” will be even more your best friend due to him or her being a little more quiet and well behaved. You will notice results within the first three days but really start to see results within two weeks.

After a while you really couldn’t care less why the little nimrod’s doing it, you just want to make the barking stop. Does that sound about right to you?

Trust me, I know what you’re going through all too well.
How would I know these feelings of frustration so intimately?

Simple, my wife got a small Poodle and the little bugger absolutely would not stay quiet for 10 minutes. I swear, if an ant walked across the road he would carry on for 20 minutes non stop. I was just about to lose my marbles with the little loudspeaker.

Now, please don’t get me wrong, I really love animals and I especially love dogs. I don’t know about you personally, but I like well behaved dogs.

Here are a few of the things to stop a dog barking  that I discovered:

All the books said “You must to find out why the dogs barking in the first place”. And I’m thinking yeah, right! I don’t know, nor do I care why the little dim bulb’s carrying on, just make him stop.

But I do have to agree with them, there is good barking and bad barking. So when training your dog it is important to teach your dog the difference between nuisance barking and good barking (like if  it’s 2 am and I’m snoring keep quiet, but if you see a guy with a mask and a sack, Bark!).

As it turns out there is actually a lot of different kinds of barking, there’s reactive, territorial, separation anxiety, fear and warning barking. And without becoming a Sigmund Freud for Animal Planet tm I truthfully couldn’t tell you which was which.

I did find a few things that actually worked really well. What the heck it only took 5 hours of reading & video’s and it cost more than the dog did to buy all the books to find one that worked.

But here’s one of the tips that it said that worked pretty good. Every time the dog barks give it a piece of bacon with 1/2 a Prozac stuck into it (ok, ok, so that was my solution and not exactly what the book said, but the dog liked it!) Just kidding around!

No really, what the book said was give the dog another outlet. And because it might actually take me an hour and a half to watch the TV show 60 Minutes, I’m thinking, alternate outlet, WHAT! they want me to plug the little begger into a wall socket?

Well, turns out I was wrong, they meant every time he starts yapping give him a toy and shake it around for a second so he gets the idea to play with it. This way when the dog begins feeling anxiety, nervousness or separation it will search for the toy and find comfort in it.
